Harry Truman made major repairs to the Presidential Palace* in 1949; then in 2009 the place was turned into Section 8 Housing with great fanfare. Now it needs to be cleaned up and fumigated.

* Originally called the “President’s Palace” on early maps, the building was officially named the Executive Mansion in 1810 in order to avoid connotations of ROYALTY. Ency. Britannica. emphasis provided

On another topic, we had the US Ambassador to Japan recently attend a ceremony commemorating the bombing of Hiroshima. I found THAT very disturbing.

Next January will be the 200th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. Some of the most elite formations of the British Army were shamefully routed by a poorly equipped, understrength, hodgepodge of patriotic Americans.

I’m certain that, when the occasion is appropriate, US diplomats will remind the Brits that we had to save their sorry backsides twice during the early- and mid-20th century.

“How many times has Obama, figuratively slapped the U.K. in the face?”

Good point! We deserve it.

Personally, I am not offended. Although I look at the incident as in bad taste, America used to stand for freedom of speech and expression. I refuse to allow political correctness and thin skin to tarnish a very long term of friendship between America and England. Whoever posted the announcement marking the 1814 burning of White House with BBQ and cake, needs to grow up and enter the world of adults and maturity. This is a free speech matter and the actions of one or two individuals. It should not be construed as the policy of the English government.
If I had to guess, it’s probably the work of the hordes of mannerless muslims who now infest the UK government.

Another win for the wussification of culture.

I thought the gimmick was funny, in the vein of good friends who can take the occasional “shot” at each other and both laugh about it.

Personally, I’m offended at the people who take offense at such things, especially when they do so on my behalf or in my name.

The song Battle of New Orleans comes to mind, too.

"In 1814 we took a little trip..."

The attack was doomed from the start because General Packenham was an idiot who ordered an attack on intact earthworks with no ladders long enough to scale them. Didn’t take a military genius to win that battle for the Americans. Fortunately, Packenham had the good sense to get himself killed and his army taken over by someone with more wit, who shortly after managed to take Fort Bowyer and was about to take Mobile when news of the treaty arrived. Thus, Britain won the last land engagement of the War and the only thing that saved Mobile was news of the Treaty arriving.

Not really. The loss of one colony didn’t affect the Empire, which went on to expand greatly in the century after 1783.

And as for this cake, Americans need to remember WHY we burnt the WH. If in doubt, ask a Canadian.

Firstly, the elite formations were in Europe fighting Napoleon. What fought in 1812-14 were good, but not elite regiments.

Secondly, as usual, Americans grossly exaggerate the ‘downhomeness’ and the training of the US armies in 1776-83 and the war of 1812. This idea that the Americans were all pitchfork carrying, rags wearing men is a nonsense. In fact, it insults the quality and training of the US troops of both wars.

Yes, that would have mitigated the intense bad feelings Americans still hold over this loss. ;-]
