When Russian President Vladimir Putin began referring to portions of Ukraine by their Tsarist-era name, Novorossiya, Russia hands expressed alarm.
Novorossiya, or New Russia, incorporates the area of Southern Ukraine from Donbass to the present day border with Moldova. Some suggested that Putins brazen invasion and annexation of the Crimean Peninsula was a prelude to a much more significant land grab. They noted that Putin could have designs on the entirety of Southern Ukraine, linking Russia to the portion of Moldova known as Transnistria, an area which has been under Russian occupation for years and is already a de facto Russian territory.
In fact, Russias gambit in Ukraine were foreshadowed by Putins remarks to then President George W. Bush. “You don’t understand, George, that Ukraine is not even a state, Putin said.
Others scoffed at this tasseography. They suggested that Putins use of this archaic term was intended for domestic consumption only a bit of jingoistic nationalism which, while menacing, was generally harmless. Those who scoffed are not looking especially prescient today.
Well, Putin is using the same language he used to delegitimize Ukraines existence to threaten another former Soviet Republic the massive Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan.
Putin was reportedly asked by a Russian student about what he considered a disturbing growth of nationalist moods in Kazakhstan. The questioner asked if Moscow had a plan to address this dangerous condition when the long-standing president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, dies.
Putin replied that Kazakhs did not have a statehood before the collapse of the Soviet Union, and their condition was a unique one in the former Soviet space. “It was never a state,

Also according to Putin “Alaska was never an American state.”
That will be a tough one for our pro-Kremlin FReepers to spin . . . but they will try. “No proof,” “insurgents found the weapons there,” “they are all Muslims anyway,” “the Alaskans are Nazis . . . . “
I don't think Putin has any idea of the trouble coming his way.....
To his local fans, this will only enhance his “manly” appeal to them.
"pro-kremlin FReepers"...that's a hard one for me to understand. Of all the zottings that take place here, I don't understand why they still exist.
Oh, that's right...never mind.
Ha! Who would want a Stan country?
Well, it’s tough to sort them out: we have our Kremlin tools, to be sure, but they are wise enough to disguise themselves as Ron Paul-types, or Buchanan-style isolationists. And we have the latter too, so no one really knows . . . .
It's not like Kazakhstan was ever really a country outside Russian sponsorship. And, the Moslems are feeling frisky...making Christians nervous.
Putin, the stupid russian that he is, underestimates the stan brothers.
They are on the march now as we see in the movement of ISis. This will inspire other marginal operators inclusive of the whole southern border of Russia.
His government is already loaded with brotherhood operatives...just like Obama’s.
In fact north part of Kazakhstan was Russian before 1950s, just like Crimea. On the other hand, unlike incompetent Ukrainian politicians Kazakhs have seen the problem. They have actually built a new capital city along a piles of camel crap in a middle of nowhere up north in the 1990s. Not to mention a that in 1989 the north was predominately inhabited by Russians, Ukrainians and Germans, making Kazakhs an absolute minority. Today Caucasian population is much lower, probably down to 20%. On the other hand Kazakhstan is doing much better than Ukraine in terms of economy, and actually almost on par with Russia. Ethnic cleansings are left in 1990s, Caucasians are probably doing better than the native average and for that reason I don’t think they have any reason to uprise, even if there is an outside agitation. Also there is no Russian military presense in Kazakhstan and a sizeable and influential Kazakh minority. Military, police and security agencies are full of them, including at many top positions.
‘a sizeable and influential Kazakh minority’=’a sizeable and influential Kazakh minority (in Russia).’
You mean, then Muslims that Putin doesn’t send against actual Christians.
Borat will not be happy.
Tsar Putin is living up to his Imperial nickname
You have to understand that those who are pro-Tsar will tell us that this is the internal affairs of Russia.
