Smoke rises from Ain Zalah oil field in Northern Iraq

Peshmerga Retake Oil Town, Closes in on Zumar

30.08.2014

BasNews, Dohuk

Kurdish Peshmerga forces have completely retaken the oil rich town Ain Zalah and all associated oil fields in Northern Iraq.

A BasNews correspondent in the region has revealed that on Saturday Peshmerga forces took control of the town of Ain Zalah, a mixed town near Zumar in Northern Iraq, along with all the oil wells in the town.

A few days ago, when the Peshmerga attacks began, Islamic State (IS) jihadists set the oil fields on fire before deserting the town, which they had seized earlier this month.

BasNews has learned that Peshmerga forces are currently progressing toward Zumar, a key strategic town north west of Sinjar.

The recent progress of the Peshmerga comes after intense fighting on Saturday between Peshmerga and IS militants in the region, where Peshmerga were able to take control the Batana Mountain near Zumar.

Ain Zalah is a town north east of Mosul Province, estimated to hold one million barrels of oil reserves and a daily output capacity of 20 thousand barrels.

one million barrels of oil reserves and a daily output capacity of 20 thousand barrels.

They're pumped dry by October, if the writer is accurate.

When pumped at full capacity if your math is right.

“When pumped at full capacity if your math is right.”

If it REALLY held one million barrels of oil, they wouldn’t even mention it in the article. Swimming pools in the Middle East hold that much oil.

The LIBERAL ARTS MAJOR that wrote the story apparently doesn’t know the difference between 1 million and 1 billion...and no one in his editorial chain knows it either.

That they are advancing on Tall Abu Zahir seems more likely at this point than the reported position "northwest of Sinjar."

Such would be consistent with shoring up their control of Mosul Dam, then the lake ahead of putting, and then at least a siege of Mosul itself, cutting off support for the Black Flaggers stretched closer to Erbil and Baghdad.
