NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Mothers who give birth in areas with higher concentrations of African-Americans are less likely to get breastfeeding support on maternity wards than mothers in other communities, a new study shows.
Breastfeeding provides well-documented health benefits to infants and their mothers. But African-American women are about 16 percent less likely to nurse their newborns than white women, according to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

My wife never gave any of our five children instructions on how to breast feed. It came naturally to them.
For crying out loud I’m a guy and I picked up my niece once with my shirt off and got latched on to!

Yes, this happens. I breastfed my first three and the fourth, for some reason, I had that happen to me. Not a drop. We found the Weston A Price homemade formula recipe and she is big and strong (still drinks an easier version of it) and healthy like anything.
I find a lot of the posts on this thread seriously - not joking - racist.
I will tell you that in my circle of black friends, there was pressure from the older women in the family and sometimes the older men NOT to breastfeed, and discounting what some hospital authority said about how great it was, was easy. My friends did and do breastfeed but they had more social pressure not to than my white friends. When I was a new mom for the first time, back then I did get some negative vibes from older relatives (the generation that is now dead), so I get it. You have to be really firm in your ideas to stand up to your female elders.
