At one point in our history, only property owners were allowed to vote.
Property owners have a “dog in the fight”, whereas non property owners have no dog yet, they want to have a say in how things are run.
No property, or no business ownership should equal “no vote”. That would go a long way in silencing non- stakeholders in our society.

I do not know if we can get back to your ideal. After all, even one share of stock would get you the franchise. I have a brother in law (a police officer by the way) who advocates that those on welfare should not be able to vote. Why should someone not pulling his weight have a say in how the money is divied up?
