...or maybe they should charge extra for entitled a$$holes who don’t have any respect for other people and insist on reclining their seats into the knees of the person behind them.

I love this “I paid for it i will recline if i want” bs... you paid for the same amount of space as the guy behind you.. you recline ..your gain space and the guy behind loses space .. that a simple fact.. you just took space from the person behind you.. so if the person in front of you is not reclining, you now have more space then others..and yout took it from the person behind you...

Funny.. the front seats in cars recline..if you were in the front seat would you recline if there were people in the back seat?

And the back seat against the bulkhead does no recline on most planes, nor does the one in front of the exit row, so someone always loses.

But long legs, and knees, exist too so if they prevent you from reclining, shut up.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Seating is available with adequate leg room for those with long legs. If one cannot fit in the seat that they have purchased, it’s not the fault of the person seated in the row ahead.

It's becoming more and more common to see seats that don't recline. I've encountered this on quite a few Delta flights in recent months. Here's an example of an airline that is removing the option altogether.

This Airline Is Saying Goodbye To Reclining Seats

I’m 6’5”.

Who said I’m not able to buy a larger seat? I don’t want to spend another 1000 bucks to fly.

When I buy my coach ticket, I do it with the expectation that my knees will suffer. Likewise, others need to expect that when they buy their coach seat it is possible that they will not be able to recline their seat because knees are firmly planted in the back of it.

Who said I don’t fit? I certainly didn’t. I fit snugly, with knees planted in the back of your seat. Are you suggesting I need to pay 1000 bucks more for my flight so that you can recline your seat?

Use of one of those devices is a FAA reg violation, and can get the user fined several thousand bucks on the spot by the gov’t. No ticket, no hearing, pay up.

Incorrect.

It’s one thing of course if you (or anyone) is too tall to physically allow the seat to recline. In other words, I’m obviously not advocating sitting in a seat, and jamming that seat into some guy’s knees for the whole flight “just because it’s my space”. Your knees are there I’m not going to ram my seat up against them constantly. In fact I sat in front of such a man a couple of years ago: an obviously large individual with no way to put his knees/legs anywhere but right up against the back of my seat. Of course I didn’t try to recline then. Of course!

What I was talking about in my post #50 were the jerks like the woman in the OP article, and any others, who clearly have enough legroom if they just reposition their legs (stretched out more) or hey, don’t use the tray table as a pillow. Or also, any who think that just because a seat touches their knees (not pushing against them in a painful manner but just touching) that’s an “invasion of space”. It’s not. It’s called a crampt seat. Deal with it.

So returning to you it’s obvious it woukdnt be physically possible to recline a seat back when you are sitting in a seat. Fine. Again I’m not talking about people like you. (Although I would say you might want to get a better seat just for your own health but I digress).

I’m talking about the people who can’t stand the seat touching them at all (when it’s reclined) and/or idiots like the woman in the OP, and/or people who can’t stand the fact that the seat “comes back” into “my space” at all. Again (assuming you aren’t 6’5”, 250 lbs or above) if the seat can go back without physically hurting you, then it’s YOU who have to deal with it coming back.

Write to the airlines to get them to change to no reclining if it’s that much of an issue for you. But honestly, is it really that much of an invasion if a seat is a few inches in your “personal space”? You can get that space back anyway if you just recline yourself.

I think that for the most part, I reject all these arguments that have to do with “the airlines gave me a recline button, therefore it’s mine to use as I see fit so deal with it….as if that should be the end of the matter”. The airline also gave a tray for people to use and for the most part, it can’t be used when the recline is used. What you have is a situation where the airline has created the problem by setting up a conflict with an implied promise to both parties and the reality is that these are not mutually exclusive…..and neither is there a system in place that gives one priority over the other (which is a separate argument from whether knee defenders can or can’t be used because it modifies the airlines equipment. And by reducing leg length, it has just brought the problem to be one where the conflict is truly unavoidable.

The airlines created this conflict and it’s up to them to solve it… here are some ‘technical solutions for them…

- Just make all seats so that they don’t recline.

- Come up with a new seat design that reclines but doesn’t change the leg space for the person behind. This isn’t actually all that hard to do but it will involve completely new seats of a different type (ones that rotate as opposed to just a seatback laying back).

- Come up with an interlock system whereby the person who wants to recline has to have their seat cooperatively released by the person behind. This adds a layer of complexity that the airlines probably don’t want but it avoids the conflict by having both parties involved…. If this was done, there would have to be announcement that explained it all to the passengers during the “here’s how your seat belt works” announcements. Something like this…. “If you are in a seat that reclines, please be aware that the person behind you may not want you to recline… you can ask them to release your seat but if they don’t want it released for whatever reason, your seat won’t be able to recline and please respect their decision. For those of you who don’t care if the seat ahead of you is reclined, you can push the release button now so that the party ahead of you can recline if they so choose. Oh and for those of you who attempt to recline your seat, this automatically releases the seat ahead of you for recline.

- Others??

As one how works on a laptop on virtually every flight and almost invariably has to put it away when a seat is released ahead of me, I frankly like the attention that this issue is being given and I hope the airlines pay attention and come up with a solution that works. I had one instances where my laptop was ‘pinched in’ when the seatback ahead reclined and when the person wouldn’t move forward to release my trapped computer, a FA had to be called. Regardless, given that airlines like to do things on the cheap, I suspect that what will happen is that they will just make all seats inoperable for anyone to recline. Some airlines have already done that.

Back in the day (now I only fly business or first class), when someone would recline into my space...

That's an odd way of looking at it. "Your space?"

Did you pay for the recline button that's in "my space?" If not, then what gives you the right to control it?

If you want to control the recline on my seat, then you can buy my seat from me for that right. I'll only charge you 50% of what I paid, in cash, and then you can control the vertical, you can control the horizontal.

Otherwise, recline your own seat, too, and get "your space" back.

the airline should sue her for the diversion

Which is not far removed from hijacking.

“Recline your seat and get your space back”

That sounds very reasonable but just don’t ever take a seat on the last row on Southwest. They don’t recline an inch and you are trapped in here.

I am only 5’3” so I have never been bothered by the seat in front of me reclining but I can understand how tall people feel trapped in any seat.

That’s the simple solution to all this. Non reclining seats. Can always buy up to economy plus or first class if you want more leg room.

When the airlines shrunk these spaces to cram more seats in they should have known to disable the reclining seats!!!

#20 Plus they are 17” wide which is a very tight squeeze. You cannot even stand up straight to get in or out of the seat. Sardines in a can.

You are right! This woman's antics hijacked an entire flight. Her juvenile, entitlement based, narcissistic behavior put the crew and passengers at risk, and a loss of income.

I wonder if individuals could sue her on lost time alone? If someone misses their connection flights, or an important meeting, to to a woman's "hissy fit", I wonder if she puts herself at legal (civil judgement) jeopardy? That is, of course, to be considered IF the airline(s) didn't make it right.

Maybe class action lawsuits against an individual would stop this nonsensical behavior?
