LOL. WTF is the constituency for this, other than Americans tired of Puerto Rico being a net drain on tax dollars? Seriously. Spain was an empire. Puerto Rico was its colony. The Spanish military was brutal to Puerto Ricans when it controlled the island. Independence, I can see, but joining Spain is laughable.
As much as those of us with Puerto Rican blood appreciate the Spanish roots, you need to have some misguided romantic/nostalgic notion of Puerto Rico’s days under Spain as this Nieves fellow has. What we call La Madre Patria (”The Mother Country”) was one abusive parent. She enslaved (and ended up exterminating) the island’s Indian population, sent tyrannical governors, and overall kept her last colony in the Americas sick, illiterate, dirt-poor, democracy-challenged, and underdeveloped. That the Crown granted Puerto Rico some autonomy in 1897 was too little too late.
