Remember the polar vortex, the huge mass of Arctic air that can plunge much of the U.S. into the deep freeze? You might have to get used to it.
A new study says that as the world gets warmer, parts of North America, Europe and Asia could see more frequent and stronger visits of that cold air. Researchers say that's because of shrinking ice in the seas off Russia.

These 'polar vortices' used to be called 'Alberta Clippers'. They were damn cold then, too.

Any article by Seth Borenstein should automatically be considered flagrant, lying trash. The guy is a total waste of protoplasm.

The ice pack last summer was something like 30% more than the year before. Weird how an effect of melting sea ice would happen in a year when the ice was a lot more extensive.

How does moving cold from one place to another result in net warmth?

Perhaps that polar vortex is moving the ice cap from the Russian to the Canadian side of the Arctic Ocean.

Oh’ computer models...my head is exploding.....
As far I I can tell every global warming computer model has serious flaws in predicting weather temperatures....
All of them did not predict the temperature to stop raising in the last 17 years....
So of course this one is correct..../ S

It’s the friction of the moving ice that causes warming.

Firsthand Weather says this about the above pic.
"The Jamstec is predicting for the United States to experience very cold temperatures this winter. I believe the cold will be more focused in the eastern half of the United States, while most of the West will stay warmer overall. This model has the entire U.S. in an icebox, but I highly doubt the entire country will be cold like that.
I do keep an eye on this model during the pre-winter months, and it has consistently been predicting temperatures to be cold for the eastern half of the U.S. This is the first model run where it has spread the cold further west."

I wish I could read this but global warming has caused the seas to rise to the point I’m treading water in Houston....

"Its the friction of the moving ice that causes warming."I have yet to observe that phenomena in my Scotch on the rocks.
But I will continue observations-to help with future modeling, of course.

If you look at the historical data:
http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/en/home/seaice_extent.htm
The extent of the Arctic sea ice during the winter months, when the polar vortex occurs, has been fairly consistent over that last 30 years. If there is no increase in uncovered water during the winter how could this have an affect on the formation of the Polar Vortex?
To: SnuffaBolshevik
I have yet to observe that phenomena in my Scotch on the rocks. Keep an eye on it over time. You'll find that Global Warming makes the Scotch disappear.

Remember the polar vortex, the huge mass of Arctic air that can plunge much of the U.S. into the deep freeze? You might have to get used to it. OK. Let's play along and take Seth at his word. We are going to see more and more polar vortexes over the next decade. Our winters are going to be bitter cold over the next decade. Is that the prediction, Seth?
Of course, we all know that when winters get warmer, or jump from cold to warm to back again, that the predictions of regular polar vortexes will go out the window and whatever the condition of the day is will be evidence of Global Warming.
