Texas Parents Stunned by Common Core Materials Coming Home From School

DALLAS, Texas -- It is like a Texas sampler platter of the 2014-15 Common Core offerings served up around the state -- Sadlier "Common Core Enriched Edition" Vocabulary, Springboard and Carnegie Math. There is even a kindergarten handout that defines the importance of the term "Common Core." Parents are up in arms. More so, they are worried. They have heard endlessly that there is no Common Core in Texas. It is the law. Yet, this is what is coming home in the backpacks.

To her surprise, a Boerne Independent School District (ISD) parent pulled out the "6 Math Terms to Know (in primary grades)" from her kindergartener's Fabra Elementary take home folder in the Texas Hill Country. Apparently, "Common Core" itself is a math term that five year olds need to know.

The sheet places a high value on Common Core, which is defined as "The Common Core State Standards are expectations our state has adopted to provide a framework for teaching, answering the question - what should our students know by the end of the year? As a school, we have chosen to use specific mathematical processes to teach the Common Core Standards."

It also provides a link to the official Common Core site for the five year old, who may or may not be reading yet, but she or he will be able to find numerical patterns using a process called "subitizing" to identify the number of items in a small set without counting. It's all part of what the handout calls, the new number sense or "an understanding of number relationships that allows students to work mathematical problems without a traditional algorithm."

The parent who provided the handout asked Breitbart Texas to withhold her identify for "fear is that my children will be targeted at school by Common

Thanks for the link. I watched it and will share it.

My daughter is a kindergarten teacher in an urban public school in Massachusetts. Kindergarten is a time for finger painting and socialization. No longer.

She had to start teaching this curriculum last year in a sort of guinea pig “experiment”. Her class included some normal kids, some not so normal kids and future serial killers.

The demands put on the teachers to teach to the test with the “new improved techniques” and to achieve the expected results, was overwhelming.

She’s at a crossroads this year,(and she’s not alone in this dilemma within her school system), whether she should continue in public school education and be miserable or just leave the system altogether.

hslda.org is a good site for home schooling education. Co-ops are always hungry for good teachers...

“...they MAY not...”

Therein lies the problem. The term “may” is discretionary. It should have been codified as SHALL. Yeesh.

Any parents who claim to be shocked by this have not been paying attention.

despite private schools and home schooling the costs and difficulty of those options means that public schools remain a monopoly.

The best option to stop all the destructiveness coming out of DC is school choice with vouchers, so that competition is introduced into the equation.

I hope President Cruz kills common core, but a part of me wishes he would kill it at the end of the second year of his term... using the first two years to scrap all existing lessons and put in phonics, gun safety, the constitution, and many other lessons that would have the left screaming to end common core before it is put down.

I am curious as to why the teacher who gave outlawed materials to her students is not named. They never are in the reports, they are always faceless and nameless. Time to put their names out and allow the community to deal with them.

College?

It’s worse than Common Core.

I grew up in the ‘70s. in Catholic School with nuns...with habits

The girls who went to Holy Cross, Villanova, Providence and the rest, came back completely brainwashed on feminism. Forget the State Colleges! I went to one. and that was when you were allowed to HAVE an opinion.

You cannot send a kid to college if they are not completely well formed and able to withstand the brainwashing.

By the time a current ten year old is seventeen, there will be choices anyway. there are on line schools which issue accredited bachelors degrees without a tedious admissions process, and do it a lot cheaper than a brick and mortar.

This is intimidation, and whenever one says , no, for God’s sake, I am not doing that to my child, God always, 100% of the time comes in to save the day.

From experience.

NO.

You don’t want to send your kid to a school who will not take a home schooled kid.

Get around people who do it correctly, or go to private school. Or home school in the earlier years for good formation.

I know a family who home schooled, and their last child is now on a full ride at a med school, second woe is in a doctorate program at a huge University, he is a rocket scientist, and the oldest is a lawyer.

They all home schooled to 12th grade except the oldest who wanted the experience of a big school. She entered the local school later and became the class president.

get to know people like this.

In all our experience with public school, the thing that drove me away was the anonymity of the teachers.

It was not published where the attended school nor their religion.

sorry, If I am going to give my child over for eight hours a day fro a year I need to know who that person is, and especially their religion.

It’s my job as a parent.

This government cannot and has not taken that away from me.

I have had full freedom in raising my kid.

THe only real problem I’ve had are gossipy jealous sheep minded neighbors who worship the government

My sister has the same dilemma, 2 years till retirement or get out now. She voted for Obama and now that it touches her directly, she is no longer a fan. Sad part is, she is a good teacher and loves doing it. I have little sympathy for her problem, I warned her and her husband and still they went alone with their government cohorts and voted for Zero.

The text books may not be common core, but all the materials and homework may be under the “enrichment” or “classroom materials” exemption.

Exactly.

That’s why - even/especially in TX - parents must stay vigilant about checking their kids’ work (homework, curriculum, test reviews, etc). If they find this cr@pola is going on, they need to let all of their friends know.

Then, they ALL need to blast the district board members. PUSH BACK!
