Just think how much sooner we’d have reached the moon had we had Common Core 50 years earlier . . .

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

add 114 to 9886, subtract 114 from318 add 204 to 10,000...something about the distributive and associative properties of addition and subtraction with a simple bit of algebra.

I do that combining numbers to get tens, but you have to know other math cats first.

Who the heck cares how *comfortable* the kids feel with it.

They need to memorize their basic math facts because memorizing 9+6=10 and being able to instantly recall it, is FAR quicker than grabbing a pen and paper and writing it all out and taking a minute to calculate it.

They will discover the short cuts once they get the basics down.

I made my kids memorize their math facts and I would not let them use a calculator until they were in Algebra 1 of Saxon Math.

All of them have superior math skills. All three of them are in STEM fields.

The condescension dripping from the teacher’s voice was really annoying.

Isn’t she so special that she can take a full minute to explain how to add 9+6.

“...by recognizing that you need 114 to get to 10,000.”

How is that ‘recognized’? Only by doing a subtraction problem, right? Along with the other subtraction you throw into that solution.

Not buying it. Are you a teacher? Public school?

I thought 6=3+3 thanks for clearing that up

Really, she just Happened to pick 1+5 which works really well for that problem.

What if the kids picks 2+4 or 3+3? Or 5+1? THose kids would be in a tail spin if they put the numbers in the wrong order. They're in a world of hurt.

And even at that point, they have to have some math facts memorized to know all the possibilities and pick the right one to make a *complicated* problem like 9+6 work.

The idiots are basing their problem solving on prior knowledge and memorized facts and don't even seem to realize it.

I know it's going to be Tom Lehrer without clicking.

Excerpt of "New Math" with Lehrer teaching the subtraction problem 342-173:

...

"Now remember how we used to do that. three from two is nine; carry the one, and if you're under 35 or went to a private school you say seven from three is six, but if you're over 35 and went to public school you say eight from four is six; carry the one so we have 169, but in the new approach, as you know, the important thing is to understand what you're doing rather than to get the right answer here's how they do it now."

“And how do they know 6 = 5 + 1????”

Because 5 is the little brother of their friend Big 10.

Now that's just plain unfair.

First you link Tom Lehrer, then you answer the question with a Tom Smothers punchline.

I did, but I also canned up tomato sauce today with tomatoes from the garden and did four loads of laundry that I hung out.

I’m exhausted and clearly not thinking straight.

That was the second major mistake in that post.

I was thinking the same thing. The difference, however, is that CC teaches this as a primary problem solving technique before teaching the basics and letting the students develop these concepts on their own as they advance.

Children that young are very concrete thinkers.

They do not do well with really abstract stuff unless they’ve precocious to begin with.
