The President Is Not Checked Out
Townhall.com ^ | September 5, 2014 | Erick Erickson

Many people suggest President Obama has checked out. He treats the ever-growing threat of ISIS as an abstraction. Sources from within the administration are now more openly admitting that, for almost a year, intelligence and Pentagon officials have advised the president of the threat. He has chosen to do very little. Last Wednesday, he said we would "shrink" ISIS and make it "a manageable problem" as opposed to eliminate it.

A few weeks ago, I had dinner with a sitting governor and a dear friend of mine. The friend leaned over to the governor and me and said Barack Obama is to America as Clarence the Angel was to George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life." Barack Obama is showing the world what it would look like had America never been born. As this friend later wrote, "Unsurprisingly, Bedford Falls is now Pottersville, and it's a terrible place. Unfortunately, we do not get to revert to the tolerable if modest status quo at the end of the lesson: George Bailey will eventually have to shell the town and retake it street by street from Old Man Potter's Spetsnaz."

Consider how far the world has collapsed in the past year. Again, my friend noted, since Labor Day weekend last year the Chinese expanded their air defense identification zone to incorporate the territory of other nations; the Russians annexed Crimea; ISIS rose; the Russians invaded Ukraine; Mosul fell; the Hungarian liberal democracy collapsed into Russian-aligned authoritarianism; a Central American refugee crisis spawned a border and humanitarian crisis in the United States; the Egyptians and Emiratis attacked Libya without telling the United States; Iraqi Christians and the Yazidi are suffering genocide at the hands of ISIS; NATO is scrambling to shore up its eastern-frontier defenses; mainstream anti-Semitism is re-emerging; the Americans are on the verge of yet another war in Iraq; middle America is seeing race riots, etc., etc.

Seventy-five years ago this past Monday, German tanks rolled across the Polish border setting off World War II. Sixty-nine years ago this past Tuesday, World War II ended as the Japanese formally surrendered. In the nearly seven decades since, the West has established a world-wide peace. Though not flawless, we have lived a relatively stable and secure existence. In just the past year, Barack Obama has largely undone seven decades of gains toward peace.

Our peace was balanced on top of two pillars. The first of the two pillars is the idea of peace through strength. Ensuring the American military could go anywhere at any time to strike back against any foe, no matter its size, has caused many to give us pause. In the last 25 years, after the collapse of the Cold War, America has consciously decided to scale back our military. We have handed military actions to FBI agents serving indictments, signaling our growing complacency.

The other pillar is the moral certainty of the West's goodness. We have, since the fall of Nazi Germany and the rise of its kissing cousin the communists, maintained Western values are superior and right and true. Barack Obama does not believe in the goodness and superiority of Western values. He sees former old colonialists trying to preserve their dubious claims on power. What so many for so long took for granted, Barack Obama sees as oppressive and regressive.

Barack Obama is the first American president who, through his upbringing, writings and actions, conveys a deep sense of grievance toward the American experiment. The idea that we are the last best hope for mankind is anathema to him. Barack Obama thinks the world, if the American imperial aggressor would just sit on the sidelines, could work out its problems and would be better off.

In short, the world has descended into chaos these past 365 days because the American president thinks America is to blame for much of the world's ills and has chosen not to check himself out, but to check the United States out of international affairs. The only question now is how many around the world will die because of it.

I agree with your statement “the worst is yet to come”. We have 2 more years of this sob and there is no doubt “THE WORST IS YET TO COME”!

Many people in academia harbor disdain for America. Whatever the original source of Obama’s negative attitude toward this country was, his meandering travels through academia certainly were a factor in further stoking the fires.

Can’t check out if you never checked in!
0 was always a puppet, reading words of others off the teleprompter.

Now those that were pulling the strings have already cached in, or are searching for the most lucrative book deal or revolving door. Too busy to pull the strings for 0.

No question about it. Things are going to get a lot worse. Even if the hapless Republicans manage to gain control of the senate, its not going to stop Obama on bit. In fact, he will likely do even more damage knowing there’s no way the Pubbies will ever impeach him. He will defy the congress at every turn and this could lead to a paralyzing constitutional crisis.

So... you don’t resent America, you just resent all the people in America ?

The resentment you talk about is really covetousness, rooted in unbelievable grinding poverty. The left has for over a century repeated the lie that “You are poor because someone else is rich.” Many, many people buy into that lie because it takes away their shame and guilt for not being self reliant and personally responsible. This works over and over again, in all races and countries. Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Detroit, the lie works. They are not Asian, and they all hate, resent and are covetous of the wealth of America, and the West in general.

The left makes people believe that if they just join them in their hate and self-pity then they will become wealthy when the evil rich are destroyed.

The love of money truly is the root of all evil ................

I would also add that a constitutional crisis would benefit Obama. It would be a nice distraction to divert peoples’ attention away from his numerous foreign policy disasters.

He has chosen to do very little.

He is being effective in furthering his aims. He has not checked out. He is behaving as a Sultan from a couple of centuries ago. His viziers are taking care of business in the capital while he and his retinue play. The vizier has his orders for what is to be done and is carrying them out. The Sultans and Emirs of yore in mature Moslem tyrannies were figureheads for the groups that actually ran things and were encouraged to enjoy their opulence so that the affairs of the State could be carried out in the shadow while the subjects lived vicariously in the luxurious pursuits of the Sultan.

I think you’re probably right. Any kind of Constitutional crises that Obama instigates will be framed by the media to be blamed on the Republicans, and the sheeple will buy into the lie. This is more likely if the ‘Pubs somehow manage to win the Senate, which is problematic given their track record for blowing elections. But if they do, look for Obama to poke the hornet’s nest again and again until something gives.

“The many cells growing here will hit us, and hit us hard probably in the coming days and weeks.”

Yes. Probably densely populated, liberal urban areas.

He’s doing what he’s always done; he’s faking it. He’s wearing the suit, and going to the thing, and making the speech, and sitting in the office, and talking about that issue, and doing the other Presidential thing, and doing the photo op, and whatnot, just like all the other Presidents did it.

He is behaving as a Sultan from a couple of centuries ago.

Just as monarchs ruled by the Divine Right of Kings, Obama rules by the Divine Right of the Race Card. Neither can be questioned, and even if the pathetic monarch merely plays and enjoys the perks of being royalty, the Divine Right protects the minions who represent that ruler. We need to stop respecting the race card - freedom's survival requires a presumption that the race card is invalid. That will sadly allow more real racism to slide through, as the many claims are checked to find a real racist issue in the political haystack of claims, but given the harm that the Race Card is doing, we're better off putting an end to that fraud even with the cost.

You are SO right. So many here on this thread are.

obama is just ONE player in this ‘game’. There are MANY more behind the scenes who are a part of it.

They got their guy, obama in the most powerful seat in the land and are setting things up for a big fall for the United States of America. Sort of a political, social, economic version of what a trojan horse virus does on a computer.

I think doncorleone posted the first thing that came to my mind as I read this: “...I will stand with the Muslims...”

He made NO bones about what his intentions are. But America no longer cares enough to listen. We HAD to ‘make history’ and make a BLACK man president! And he’s been proving that he’s no different from the looters in Ferguson. Only, he has the law on his side.

And sadly, no opposition from the opposing party. None.

Obama’s only forte is the blame game. A constitutional crisis is tailor made for him. And he would have a weak opponent (i.e., the hapless Pubbies) to heap blame upon.

Obama’s team plays ruthlessly well on the home field. Not so much on the away games.

Yes, instead of looking at the world as though it contains unlimited riches, they regard it as a finite pie.
