CNSNews.com) - A record 92,269,000 Americans 16 and older did not participate in the labor force in August, as the labor force participation rate matched a 36-year low of 62.8 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The labor force participation rate has been as low as 62.8 percent in six of the last twelve months, but prior to last October had not fallen that low since 1978.

BLS employment statistics are based on the civilian noninstitutional population, which consists of all people 16 or older who were not in the military or an institution such as a prison, mental hospital or nursing home.

In August, the civilian noninstitutional population was 248,229,000 according to BLS. Of that 248,229,000, 155,959,000—or 62.8 percent--participated in the labor force, meaning they either had or job or had actively sought one in the last four weeks.

The 92,269,000 who did not participate in the labor force are those in the civilian noninstitutional population who did not have a job and did not actively seek one in the last four weeks. Because they did not seek a job, they did not count as “unemployed.”

Of the 155,959,000 who did participate in the labor force, 146,368,000 had a job and 9,591,000 did not have a job but actively sought one. The 9,591,000 are the unemployed. They equaled 6.1 percent of the labor force—or an unemployment rate of 6.1 percent (which was down slightly from the 6.2 percent unemployment rate in July).

The 146,368,000 people employed in the United States in August was up 16,000 from the 146,352,000 who were employed in July.

Prior to 78 it was even lower. Is that because women were not as heavily in the work force?

The one thing these reports need to mention is the extent to which the non-retirement age population isn’t looking for a job compared to prior years. As Boomers age and retire, the non-participation rate will go up.

U.S. Economy Adds 142,000 Jobs in August, Widely Missing Views

http://www.foxbusiness.com/economy-policy/2014/09/05/us-economy-adds-142000-jobs-in-august-widely-missing-views/?intcmp=fbtopstories

OH NO! The dreaded “less-than-expected”!!

“The U.S. economy added just 142,000 jobs in August, far below expectations as major sectors such as manufacturing, retail and transportation saw weak job creation.”
However....
“The unemployment rate fell by 0.01 percentage point to 6.1%....”

So they are still screwing around with the numbers.

We have been in a depression for close to six years. If depression is measured by real unemployment, we are in the worst depression since the Great Depression.

Yes, and that has a double effect. It will be poison if the next administration is a Republican and they start using a real measuring stick. The numbers that have been fudged for 8 years will all of a sudden skyrocket up to their real places and the media will have a cow saying that it’s the new president’s incompetence.......................

I remember 1978 very well.

One of my sons was 16 and couldn’t find a part time job.

I read in the local paper that our police department had a program for troubled youths, which included finding them a job.

I remember saying to my husband that we should just tell our son to go throw a rock into a store window and then he’d get work.

Even then the law abiding working stiffs were getting shafted.

You are also bumping into the mid Seventies when a large percentage of women had only started to be employed outside the hoe. For a majority of the twentieth century married middle class women of child bearing years where not part of the labor force. That altered the labor participation rate, reducing it to an average of around the mid fifty percent area. Almost all men and a small percentage of women.

Even today around twenty five percent of population is voluntarily out of the work force. They are most often women who are home raising children and keeping house. A disproportionate percentage of men are presently doing the same as more men have been displaced in this economy than women.
