Iraqi Army, Kurds Advance Toward Mosul

The Iraqi military and Kurdish forces have kicked off an all-out campaign to recapture militant-held towns in the region of al-Khazer in Nineveh plains.

Al-Khazer lays midway through the Kurdish capital city of Erbil and the capital of Nineveh province, Mosul. The Iraqi and Kurdish forces have thus far managed to regain control over the villages of Baride, Kani Kawan, Sewidan and Ashqalan. They have also seized control of the strategic Mount Zartak which overlooks the towns of Bashiqa and Bartella. Bashiqa and Bartella are two historic Christian towns in the Hamadaniyah district. When taking over them last month, the Takfiri militants caused a mass Christian exodus there. The Iraqi and Kurdish forces have managed to surround Bashiqa, and are now advancing on its center.

The clean-up operations are now aimed at surrounding Mosul from the north, west and east. But their advance has been hampered by explosives and mines. Meanwhile, in Salahuddin province, Iraqi forces and volunteer fighters are advancing towards the city of Tikrit. This comes on the heels of the recent liberation of the strategic towns of Amerli and Suleiman Begg, east of Tikrit. By advancing into the region of Khazer, the joint forces have managed to strengthen their foothold in positions a little over 20 kilometers away from Mosul...

it appears the US training of the Iraqi Military (which included the Kurds at the time)is paying off - good job

At some point there ought to be retreating columns ripe for a highway of death. Too bad there are no A10s in Iraq.
