The U.S. Is Right To Set Out To Destroy The Islamic State [Washington Post EDITORIAL]

The U.S. Is Right To Set Out To Destroy The Islamic State

By Editorial Board September 8 PRESIDENT OBAMA and top aides are now employing the “D” word — “destroy” — to describe U.S. objectives regarding the fanatical Middle Eastern force known as the Islamic State. Already, the group has seized far more of Iraq and Syria than is compatible with the safety and human rights of the people living there, and its sights are set on further destabilization in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kurdistan, as well as terror attacks in Europe and, if it’s capable of them, the United States. The two Americans butchered by the Islamic State will not be the last if the group’s leaders have their way. This murderous terrorist army, whose scarily effective global recruitment matches its global ambitions, can be neither contained nor “managed,” as the president implied in some of his more hesitant previous comments.

We are glad that the president has come around to a more sober view. But if he is truly committed to the group’s defeat, certain things must follow from that determination. First, the objective — victory — must determine the strategy, tactics and schedule. Heretofore, Mr. Obama has had an unfortunate tendency to do things the other way round: to view military conflict as something to be carried out according to a schedule, whereby U.S. forces must be withdrawn on a particular date, whether their goals were lastingly achieved or not.

It would be nice if Obama would focus his destructive abilities somewhere else other than here.

The author of this editorial makes a very good point. In fact, it is quite similar to the point made just last night by Brit Hume on FNC: President Obama should first define his goal, and then seek the appropriate tactics, rather than the other way around.

Yes, Brit was right on.

I see Obama doing everything he can to minimize damage to ISIS. He’s in a tough predicament. He doesn’t want to hurt the Muzzies but wants to appear otherwise.

Did you ever see such pussy-footing ? It's palpable ... and sickening.

Wow; he isn’t just going to DECIMATE the terrorist this time?!

He only decimated the Al-Qaida terrorist.

Obama must really want to look tuff this time.

Obama is right to go to Iraq and break up ISIS, even though he was handed a functioning Iraq and on his own should be credited for Iraq falling apart by pulling troops out to soon.

But

Bush was wrong to take out Sadam even though democrats voted to do it as well as a coalition of nations.

Didn't Obama say he wanted to “Degrade” them and not “Destroy” them?

Kind of make them “touchy-feely” “manageable”. Allah-forbid he should destroy his allies...

Amen bro. He must be tearing his hair out, trying to figure out how to help the Muzzies, while trying to get the rest of us to think he wants to destroy them. It won't be easy. We are not easily BSd.

What is simultaneously sad and funny is that the Washington Post editorial board apparently believes Obama wants to destroy ISIS.

I think he said “degrade and destroy” which is a very parsable phrase. It leaves the word “destroy” ringing in your ear but could mean a range of things.

Max incompetence. Try destroying ISOM - Islamic State Of Mind.

The Quranic Concept of War - JOSEPH C. MYERS

The universalism of Islam, in its all-embracing creed, is imposed on the believers as a continuous process of warfare, psychological and political, if not strictly military. . . . The Jihad, accordingly, may be stated as a doctrine of a permanent state of war, not continuous fighting.”— Majid Khadduri

The “D” word I don’t want to hear Obama say is “detain”. We are in a fight for survival against religious fanatics, and history has shown us what atrocities men will do in the name of their god. You cannot and will not rehabilitate these people. If you locked them up Guantanamo style for 60 years the day they’re released they will pick up where they left off, albeit a little slower. And there is no meaningful dialogue or negotiation with these monsters who are psychotically intolerant of others and have repeatedly demonstrated an eagerness to seek the deaths of these “others”.
Our leaders need to realize that this is a war of extinction, either ours or theirs. Prisoners will only delay that decision. It’s not a pleasant thing that will have to be done, but if we shy away from exterminating these vermin and instead show mercy, they will eventually succeed. Period.

I am still trying to figure out why Iraq (and its new bestest friend, Iran) can’t destroy IS on their own.

the goal is to get through the elections. The democrats have always viewed foreign policy not as a way to improve our positions overseas, but to get a few more votes in a questionable district so they can get their domestic legislation passed.
Obama is setting this up for the next guy and voting present, kicking the can down the road.
