ISIS was never numerous enough to hold territory in the absence of support from the tribes, who gave that support at first and are now paying dearly for it. But if you open your doors to armed madmen, who is to blame if you get madness as a result?

The Sunni tribes are likely to continue to pay, because any proposed partitioning of Iraq will give the Kurds the oil in the north, the Shi'ites the oil in the east, and the Sunnis the sand in the west. It didn't have to be that way. Or I don't know, maybe it did.

Too bad we can't give the Kurds the oil in the North as well as the oil in the East, and give the Shiites the finger.
