His older brother Jack and his father were both on board, so he was with his family.
He went into the Navy in WW2 at 17, and was at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He loved photography and classical music, and played records for the crew of his ship. One day the captain went on deck to hear the sailors whistling “The Soldiers March” from “Faust” as they were painting the deck!
So, even though he was “tough”, he had an artist’s soul.

I’ve always had a lot of respect for the unsung hero types. First time I took my stepson to Oshkosh I showed him a PBY (my father worked on them). His reaction was “That’s ugly!”. A gentleman in front of us said “If you were in a life raft in the middle of the ocean it was the most beautiful thing in the world.”

Oh Absolutely!
Dad used to take me to the D’Oyly Carte opera whenever they came to Boston, The Boston Symphony, The Pops (with Arthur Fiedler!), and all the Russian Choruses, especially the Don Cossacks (some very old guys who could still sing!)
He got me into photography and Audio recording. I used to work in the darkroom with him when he shot a wedding with an old Speed graphic Camera with the huge negatives.
And I got my first tape recorder when I was 10.
Sept 6th was the third anniversary of his passing.
