Condoleezza Rice: NFL commissioner?
The Hill ^ | September 09, 2014, 11:02 am | By Judy Kurtz

Support is growing for former secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to take over as NFL commissioner following criticism of how the league handled the punishment of former Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice.

The Ravens swiftly canceled Rice’s five-year contract and the NFL suspended him indefinitely on Tuesday, one day after video surfaced on TMZ.com showing the running back striking his now-wife in an Atlantic City, N.J., elevator. Before the video was made public, Rice had been suspended by the league for two games. The current NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, later called the original punishment a mistake, writing in a letter last month to owners, “I didn’t get it right.”

The NFL said it had only seen the new video on Monday.

Now, some are saying Condoleezza Rice — who expressed an interest in the NFL job before — should replace Goodell. A Tuesday editorial in The Washington Post wrote that the NFL is “an institution in dire need” of Rice’s help, with a blaring headline: “Condi Rice: The one person who could save the NFL.”

According to a 2002 story in The New York Times, “[Rice] wants to be commissioner of the National Football League. She is serious. ‘That's absolutely right,' she said, 'though not immediately and not before Paul Tagliabue is ready to step down. I want to say that for the record.’”

Social media has also been buzzing with calls for Goodell, the son of the late Sen. Charles Goodell (R-N.Y.), to step down in favor of Rice.

What she always wanted, as she has stated on several occasions. Might be a good fit.

I’m all for it, as long as it keeps her away from political office.

You know, she could probably kick Barack's butt on the golf course. That just might, finally, get his attention.

All Condoleezza Rice needs to do is voice interest in the job, and Goodell is gone.

It would be good for the NFL and it’s horrible Image.

Hopefully, she will drop some of Goodells bad ideas. Ideas such as, London Franchise, and elimination of Kickoffs

As long as she does not run for President, she has stated that she was...I quote “mildly pro choice”

But sure NFL commissioner, all the power to her. On second thought, how bout a pro life NFL commissioner?

If she had a different skin color, would she even be mentioned for the job? She is already on the NCAA panel that will select the final four for the football championship.

She’ll be busy cleaning house in the National Felons League, and she can’t be called ‘racist’.

No, this is just another wave of political correctness. Where were these individuals when she was viciously vilified in all those political cartoons? Where? Nowhere.

I don’t think anyone, anywhere, can realistically accuse Condoleezza Rice of getting anywhere except on total merit.

I was talking to a black preacher once, who started going after Ms Rice, assuming I guess that I would agree with him. I smiled and held up my hand. You’re talking to the wrong guy, I said. I love that woman. She is the smartest person in whatever room she is in, and I admire her. He harrumphed and changed the subject.
