The NFL players are product, that’s all they are.
That thuggery is the demand of the mob (let’s call the “fans” what they are) isn’t the players’ fault.
This is why I don’t watch football any more. It’s our version of the Colosseum and the NFL provides the gladiators. How long until a player dies on TV for our amusement?
