The Daily Mail ^ | 10 September 2014 | Snejana Farberov

"Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy has been publicly called out by the owner of a local eatery for leaving a 20-cent tip on a bill totaling more than $60.

The Philadelphia burger joint PYT shared a receipt online showing what was described as Mr McCoy's paltry tip.

'The twenty cent tip that the Eagles' LeSean McCoy just left our server on his $60 check is going to come in really handy for that new official NFL McCoy jersey he had his heart set on,' the message that accompanied the receipt read. 'That is a .03% tip. New record!'"

My son in law worked as a waiter when he was in college and lets just say that a “certain” group of people behave like this more often than not.

For those with restless knee jerk syndrome, the “than not” implies a “not all”

By shaming their customer like this, they have shown themselves to be a small and petty as he.

i think people who leave small or no tips on large tabs are dinks. i think that unless extreme circumstances are at play, the people who name people who leave small VOLUNTARY tips, are also dinks. if you want to make sure servers get tips, force people to pay a certain percentage tip by adding it to the bill, but make everyone aware of it before they “get surprised” on the bill. that way they can decide if they want to eat there or not.

My wfe spent years as a waitress - she tells me that tips are earned by providing good service. When we go to some of our regular places to dine, she knows the good servers and requests them by name. Tips aren't a "right", they are something that a good server will try to be worthy of. Good servers do very well despite the occasional low-life.

Was he by himself? If so, a 60 buck burger bill should be more than enough. If not, he had others who should’ve chipped in.

I had some whore with a megaphone screaming at me in some club (set up like the “Coyote Ugly” place) in NYC years ago; small American beers were $5 each, and I bought the first round. When I took my change, this skank started making a scene.

I saw to it that they were going to stay extra late cleaning up the already-filthy bathroom for her troubles...

My wife and I ate at a Mexican restaurant, somewhere in the vicinity of the Grand Canyon several years ago, we noticed , on the menu at the bottom, in very small print, a note that said, "a 15% gratuity has been added to all menu prices". Many people were leaving tips, presumably, not having seen that very small notice.

A friend and I ran up a $60 bill in a Portuguese restaurant; I paid with a hundred and we sat around waiting for about fifteen minutes while we waited for the change. When a waitress came over and asked us if we wanted to move over to the bar, I demanded my change; the POS manager “assumed” we were leaving a $40 tip. I shared the story with friends in the area; the place was closed within a few months (in an area with so much competition, such scheming will sink you).

Wow, what an entitled little hipster waiter.

He’s acting like a senior citizen who thinks they deserve to get 15% of my salary for doing nothing.

.....discuss amongst yourselves......

Just when was a law passed that makes it illegal to NOT leave a tip? Tipping for good service has been a tradition and NEVER a law.

They tipped the slot people who helped them not a dime

What kind of "help" does working a slot machine require?

Whenever one of these stories come out, I cross the restaurant off of my list. There was one down the street from me in Bridgewater, NJ, that had a phony “homophobia” tip bruhaha a few months back. I used to go there, but never again. Why would I go to a restaurant that has no respect for my privacy?

From time to time, I leave a tip in cash, even when I am paying with a credit card. If I do this, I will add to the credit card bill to make it an even dollar amount and leave the rest of the tip on the table in cash. I you looked at the bill, it looks like I am leaving a really small tip. In reality, it is only it cases of really, really bad service that I will consider tipping 15% instead of 20%+. Maybe that is what happened here.

Yes, and so is calling out a jerk.

Those IRS comments an excellent reminder. I had some vague idea of the practice, but I never think of that when I read these kinds of stories. A number of poor tippers actually takes money out of her pocket.

I’m a generous tipper, esp. at low end restaurants. (after listening to my wife’s experiences waiting tables)
Go out for breakfast, the bill comes to $20, a ‘normal’ tip would be 15% or $3.
If the service was decent I’d up that considerably.
Or a cafeteria where waitress service is minimal. Most people wouldn’t tip at all. Some cafeteria workers come around, fill your drink, bring condiments, etc. I make sure to tip them.
They work hard, pay is minimal.
And I always tip cash, even on the rare occasion I use a credit card.

TIPS....To Insure Prompt Service.
I over tip most of the time but if the server was really poor, under tip a little. Never like a 20 cant tip or anything.

I’ve read about half the posts here.

Every one has jumped on LeSean under the assumption that he’s mean and cheap. Has anyone considered the possibility he just couldn’t do the arithmetic required to calculate the tip? Or is that raisis?

The owner is showing very bad judgment. - by. blindly defennding what was likely a deliberate act to express displeasure over bad service, and by violating the privacy of a customer in a manner that is only a step below having a secret webcam in his restrooms.

So now that the owner of this establishment has, in my view, publicly shamed himself by exposing his lack of decency and common sense, I most certainly would not eat anything being prepared under his supervision.

In other words, charge more for the meal and pay your employees more.

Works for me. But the servers better not come back and expect a tip on top of that.
