In fact, the bulk of the history of religion, with the exception of Judaism and Christianity, has had the killing of innocents as a central tenet. The fact that Islam also calls for the killing of innocents is not some unique thing that couldn't possibly be true because humans aren't like that; it is in fact why Islam is precisely the quintessential human-centered religion.
The Spanish found human sacrifice occurring as regular religious practice when they conquered the Aztecs, and they were thousands of miles removed. This is built into human nature, and it is only our Judaeo-Christian civilization and way of seeing reality that keeps us from it as well.
I think he does know all of that, but he and his backers are confident that the majority of voting America no longer learns any of this history.
