OLIVE GARDEN INVESTOR: BACK OFF ON THE BREADSTICKS
AP ^ | September 12, 2014 | Candice Choi

Olive Garden is hurting itself by piling on too many breadsticks, according to an investor that's disputing how the restaurant chain is run.

In a nearly 300-page critique, the hedge fund Starboard Value says Olive Garden restaurants lack training and discipline and that servers bring too many breadsticks to tables at a time. That leads to waste — and cold breadsticks, Starboard says.

Luke 19:23 - Jesus himself congratulates profit:

"Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?"

I remember that the salad used to be a lot bigger deal...perhaps they had endless salad like the breadsticks.

And the breadsticks used to be practically addictive - but their taste has changed.

I went there very recently, and like a lot of restaurants, things are sliding. The servers are generally overwhelmed and clueless on some things (my daughter ordered hot tea - got a tea bag but no hot water for example...and the guy was puzzled when we asked for some). And the food quality doesn’t match the price, in my opinion.

Still one of the better places I’ve been to recently, but definitely on the slide.

The thing is - the 2 closest to us are ALWAYS packed. Weekday, Weekend - doesn’t matter. I’m sure other stores aren’t as busy, but from my view, If they aren’t - its totally due to management.

I so agree. I’ve lived in Philly and Texas for the last decade and I’ve never seen an Olive Garden where I didn’t have to wait. Although anymore I never go out to eat maybe once a year anymore. I’d rather eat at home. Today, grilling with oak wood which is free. 4 large chicken breast marinated cost >$9, 12 stuffed jalapenos wrapped with bacon >$6 and BBQ baked potatoes about $1 max with $2 for BBQ sauce total for 4 people - $18 and 12 pk coke $3.50.

YOU embarrass YOURself because YOUR culinary discernment is HORRIBLE. Olive Garden is the very best Italian food in the WORLD. The use of oregano and cilantro and occasionally basil, is inspired. Their artistry is unparalleled; their skills soar; the presentation of the food is impeccable; and the flavors are both dazzling, and sublime. When I walk into Olive Garden, my heart sings, for I know I am in for the most amazing experience of my life — bar none.

I always smile a little when people talk about real Italian food.

I suspect traditional Italian food is really seafood based, originally.

All the tomato dishes we associate with Italy, recent additions. They had to wait for the Americas to be discovered first.

Funny, when I’ve been there I didn’t see any bread-sticks laying around on our table when we left.

I’m not impressed with the restaurants in italy. We have been from Florence to Venice and The Amalfi Coast. Nothing to write home about. Olive Garden is ok in a pinch but I find the food incredibly salty.

Who, me? Sarcastic? What gives you THAT mistaken idea?? I have never emitted a sarcastic statement in my life! I would sooner eat ground glass then be sarcastic; not a drop of sarcastic blood exists in my entire genetic heritage. My forefather, who was at the signing of the Bill of Rights, remarked, “Shouldn’t we be writing this in pencil?” but he was not being sarcastic, he was being serious. No no no, no sarcasm over here. In fact, I don’t even think I know what sarcasm IS!

I don’t eat veal. I’m as far from an animal-rights nut as it gets, but the conditions veal is raised in turns me off to eating it.

I live in farm country and have many friends that farm, but don’t like how veal is treated.

I always considered Olive Garden to be an Italian sit-down version of McDonalds. It’s fast food, nothing else.

Burger King is fine for what it is as well. They flame broil their burgers which is better than McDonald’s IMO.
