When you combine Variety's story about a 19% drop in entertainment industry jobs, and The Hollywood Reporter's story about the 2014 box office already being written off as a "disaster," things look pretty glum in the business of show. And probably for good reason.
No one expected Summer 2014 to tank. No one. Everyone's saying "wait till next year," but this year there was a Spider-Man, some X-Men, a bunch of Apes, more Transformers, ..., this past Labor Day weekend was the worst since the post- 9/11 Labor Day weekend.
No one knows why. No one can explain it. And that has everyone worried.

A mini-series is one that has a definite ending. Something that keeps coming back season after season is not a mini-series.
For the record mini-series dominate Asian TV, the top shows in Korea usually have 16 or 20 episodes. Not in a season, for the whole series.
You’d figure the gain in netflix-amazon-itunes film revenue would offset the loss in theater revenues.
But this ain’t happening.
Either more are stealing howood products, or just as bad for howood, fewer people care to consume howood products.
Actually, if I'm going to see something that's all flash and glitter, I'd go to the theater to see it. Might as well get the full experience. Big Explosions on the Big Screen, Surround Sound, etc etc etc.
Trouble is, I've not seen anything much that's worth the dough. Took WBill Jr. to see the latest Captain America flick (not bad, it was worth the price of admission) this spring. Before that ....... Geez, it would likely be the *prior* Captain America flick a few years ago.
Setting the quality and entertainment value aside for a moment, what I don't get is people who pay full price to see "Emotions, Pillowcases and Scented Candles III" in the theater now, when it will likely be on the Lifetime Channel by late fall. Sandra Bullock looks the same on TV for free, as she does on the 50' screen at $15 a pop. The Big Screen doesn't improve the crying and overacting, nor does it help the script. :-)
Actually its all free, even the stuff still in the theatres, if you know where to look.
I don’t pay for anything, Netflix hulu etc.
Reading is a lost art form of sorts and much more stimulating to the mind. We would all do better to spend some free time in reading. The public library is a good, cost effective resource like it or not.
The guys who made the Sharknado movies appear to be doing allright.

Hollywood stumped for Democrats for decades and for Obama in the last 6 years.
They got what they wanted, and that tanked the economy.
Suck it, Hollywood. You wanted it, you got it.
Yep, that's a part of my property taxes that I don't particularly mind parting with. I'm there weekly. Between my local selection, and inter-library loan, there's very little that I don't have access to.
I just finished "Biggest Brother" - it's a biography of Richard Winters (the company commander in Band of Brothers). It was an excellent study in leadership, and a good story as well.
Some stories just don't need embellishing.

Breaking Bad is proof that originality and craftsmanship are still possible in hollywood.
No acting, no writing, no captivating plot lines. Just a whole bunch of CGI. Yawn. Saving my money.
Perhaps Obama could read them a story of legendary feats of decisive leadership and miraculous economic recovery from his teleprompter and make them feel better about it.
Not to mention that everybody knows the movie will go straight to DVD/netflix/redbox if it’s not doing well at the Box Office. Then we can watch it at HOME and not be bothered with someone talking on their cell phone or clicking away texting about how the movie sux........................
Besides the library I scour the internet for free I-books. You can find most classics for free. Once you read a few you suddenly realize why they are called the classics.
Boy meets girl.
Boy loses girl.
Boy gets girl back.
Add in lots of car crashes, exploding stuff and product placements................
I think Breaking Bad is a black comedy I Love Lucy on steroids. Walt always has some ‘splaining to do.
Idiotic movies. And Netflix.
The new tv shows are too stupid to watch too. Except, of course, Downton Abbey, which will resume in January.
Plus, you can get pretty much everything free at your library, which is what I do. I’m on the waiting list for Homeland, Season 3.
I think I would have phrased it: a remake of a really bad remake of a pretty good series (assuming you meant the original film series and not the short-lived TV series). Not all of the original "Apes" films were good, but the first one with Charlton Heston (written by Rod Serling) is generally regarded as a classic.
How’s that supporting the Dem party working out for you Hollywood?
I liked The Giver. But it was a small film for a small audience.
