This white North Carolina R&B band released this record a year earlier on a small label, and I was one of the few to pick it as a future hit. But it didn’t achieve national air play until ABC bought the rights and distributed it nationally.

#1 – The Rascals: “People Got to Be Free”

These North Jersey boys loved the blues, and two of them came out of Joey Dee’s club band in New York. They were produced by Arif Mardin, one of the greats that worked out of Ahmet Ertegun’s Atlantic Records. There was top-notch talent in Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati, Dino Danelli – and Gene Cornish. (What’s he doing in there?)
