Kalapana.
Royal Gardens.
And now Pahoa?
With a lava flow advancing steadily toward Pahoa village, Kilauea appears poised to claim yet another community as part of its 31-year-long eruption.

I thought he quit playing soccer years ago.
Can’t they throw Rosie O’doughnut in and appease the
gods?
It’s what I would do...

and then there was this , way back when , they could , would and DID ‘divert ‘ lava flows . But not these days ?

To bad Oboe aint on vacation there.
Might start a grease fire!
Pshaw!! a fire break?
Nature must take it’s course!
Mafic lave is hard to block or divert. I’ve read about a community in Iceland that was successful but they were a fishing village and pumped many millions of gallons of seawater on to the face of the advancing lave, a major enterprise.
American lawyers have learned how to sue a volcano? LOL
Can’t divert a lava flow, can’t find our way back to the moon and can’t secure our border.
My wife and I are 2 of the some 8,000 people who will be cut off if the current flow continues its course and cuts off route 130. Route 130 is the only road that connect lower Puna with Hilo and the rest of the island.
Love your neck of the woods!! Sorry and good luck!
Thanks sheana!
Hopefully they’ll get the road open from HPP to Hawaiian Beaches for you. Not quite as convenient but.......
and how do you feel about the prospects of diversion of the lava ?
Dr. Jim K seems to be poo-pooing the idea , yet back in 1935 the original director of HVO actually accomplished the process with the help of the Army Air Corps . Now days everyone seems to be revising history and making like that never happened and that it would be a great insult to their reviving pagan beliefs if it were even tried .
The County and State of Hawaii , possibly the NGS , will all be liable for inaction and malfeasance if they do nothing and allow massive property loss and permanent displacement of persons . Including yourselves ?
Start talking to a lawyer . It’s the only thing that will move these pinheads to get off their okoles .
think of what a pair of FA-18’s , or a B-52 could do ....
Problem solved ; all the lave would be heading down to the ocean , where all the tourists could come and see it again .
Major tourism $$$ boon to the B.I. , as opposed to these Pele-huggers browbeating everyone into doing nothing and many properties being lost forever as a result .
PS : if you watch those Pahoa community meetings , I bet the out spoken ‘titas’ own properties lie nowhere near the upcoming inundation zone . Easy for them to act all ‘ cultural ‘ no?
Yes I am very much of the opinion that a lava diversion can and should be attempted. It seems to me though certainly I’m no expert that some well placed munitions aimed at the downhill flank of the Puu Oo crater would collapse the cone and send the lava lake as well as the source that feeds it back down the hill and into the sea.
The fact that certain people who hold to stone age animist beliefs in the Volcano goddess pele and that diversion would somehow dismay the deity is to me rubbish.
Any chance Punahou will be leveled?
If by Punahou you are referring to the school on the island of Oahu. No it won’t be affected by the lava flow on the East side of the Big Island.
The fact that certain people who hold to stone age animist beliefs in the Volcano goddess pele and that diversion would somehow dismay the deity is to me rubbish.
I tell ya , the state , county and even federal officials that dick around and do nothing will pave the way to massive lawsuits for negligence. Their hat-tips to neolithic belief sets will get very costly .
People in danger should be mentioning this publicly . It may be their only way to scare ‘ the authorities ‘ into some proactive measures
