The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) shot down a Syrian regime fighter jet conducting airstrikes on the groups stronghold of Raqqa on Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
The Britain-based monitor said: It is the first aircraft shot down since the regime launched air strikes against the jihadists in July following their declaration of a caliphate in late June.
Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that the plane was carrying out strikes on the ISIS stronghold of Raqa when it was hit.
It crashed into a house in the Euphrates Valley city, the sole provincial capital entirely out of Syrian government control, causing deaths and injuries on the ground, he added.
A photograph posted on a jihadist Twitter account purported to show the burnt-out wreckage of the plane.
"Allahu Akbar (God is greater), thanks to God we can confirm that a military aircraft has been shot down over Raqa," another account said, congratulating the "lions of the Islamic State."

Obama's job is to maximize the global damage for the evil side.
I don’t know the actual number but consider they:
Got a lot of Libya’s
We sent them some to fight Assad
They took a bunch from Iraq
They have $2 Billion dollars to buy them
15,000 may be high. But they got a bunch of them.
John McCain approves.
I wonder if there are any details about altitude at shootdown. The MANPADS are good to about 10K ft.
US jets next?
I’m glad you made the connection. One of the things that helped the radicals grow stronger was that we were busy supporting the “moderate rebels” against the Soviets in Afghanistan. There may have been some “moderate rebels” who really just did want the Soviets out of their territory, but a lot of them were anything but moderate and their idea of government and society made even something Soviet-dominated look like paradise by comparison.
Russia, of course, is supporting Assad in Syria, and I think we’re about to make the same mistake all over again. In fact, we’ve already made several versions of that mistake, and maybe it’s even too late to turn back. We essentially did arm ISIS, and they’re only too happy to remind us of that fact.
Yes and obama will blame Assad and use it to attack him and not the terrorists he and McCain and Clinton support.
Correction: Syrian airbase not Iraqi.
Oh I did not make the connection. It’s all over the web. I’m seeing A LOT of people talking about it. The theory seems to add up. Who really knows?
Hope the pilot is ok and makes it back from behind enemy lines. (”behind enemy lines” ,,,the area controlled by friends of the USA, Obama, and McCain)
Hillary & Company created this mess. Cheryl Mills and Clinton Inc. have scrubbed all the documents from State and DOD. I'm sure someone held onto them for their own self preservation. The key is to find and offer immunity from prosecution to that person.
Our military strategy will be to have Iraqi and other Arab sandals in the sand surround ISIS fighters, while our B-2 Bombers drop 2000lb JDAM's on their positions. Any collateral friendly fire deaths will be a lesson of "eating your peas".
will they locate the wreckage, behead the pilot, build a park and name it after John McCain?
I wonder if Obama will turn on Hillary at some point and blame her for her covert Benghazi weapons to Jihad sale? He can claim he knew nothing about it as he has stated, and Hillary and her staff go to prison. Any American deaths from RPG’s, missiles, night vision gear, etc.... can be blamed on Hillary and Obama is just trying to clean up the mess.
Please note the date in your picture. It is January 10th, 2014.
Were they wearing their purple #24 shirts or their gold ones?
Using what weaponry and who supplied that weaponry?
