The suspect in the killing of a trooper and the critical wounding of another outside a rural barracks is a survivalist...

Eric Matthew Frein, 31, of Canadensis, Pa., is still armed with the .308-caliber rifle that he used to open fire on the barracks late Friday, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said at a news conference where he revealed the suspect's name.

Noonan called Frein "extremely dangerous."

Read the police complaint at that link, the social security card was found in the jeep along with his drivers license and shooting range card.

Not at the link I posted. It said they were found via search warrant at his home.

“Police searched the home, where, according to the complaint, they found his Pennsylvania driver’s license, his Social Security card, his game commission range permit, camouflage face paint, flash lights, a black hooded sweatshirt, two empty rifle cases, “military gear” and “various information concerning foreign embassies.””

You are reading someone else’s summary and misperceptions... read the actual complaint signed by the D.A. with the details of the police investigation. The I.D.’s were found in the jeep.

Thanks for the link to “heavy.” The link substantiates what I swore I heard in local (albeit other side of PA) news. That Frien’s wallet (containing the SS card, PaDL, Game Commission card, etc) was found at his parents home...making the find (IMO) not so unusual.

For the record, I know several PSP officers (as neighbors) and they are more likely to be FReepers, TeaParty members etc, than general population.

I hope the PSP on otherside of the Laurel Mts are safe, and that they bring this suspect in.

Cooked it up for dinner; it was delicious! It is spicy, and it tastes pretty good uncooked as well.

Give it a try.

Veterans can obtain their DD214s via an online application process. I did it 3 years ago. Took 2 months to receive it.

I applied for mine in the early 70s, only to learn that mine was one of those destroyed in a fire at the St. Louis record center. I needed it to apply for a V.A. mortgage on a home.

Fortunately, they had a back up on microfiche in D.C. The whole process took about three months. When I couldn’t find that one later at age 62, I reapplied on line for another one, it took about ten days.

I’ve had to show it again since then, to Verizon, to get a discount on my phone bill, I found it without a problem that time.

Apparently a survivalist is someone who lived with his parents until a few months ago. Yup, that’s in the story.

I've spent a lot of time over the years hunting and fishing the rugged areas north of I-84, Hawley, Honesdale, and Starlight, PA, and across the Delaware River into Hancock, NY and the Western Catskill Mountains. If this guy really is a survivalist, then he should have no problem surviving in the wild and avoiding capture or catching a bullet for a few weeks. In about a month, however, the odds will begin to change as the leaves fall off the trees and people start showing up at their hunting cabins and camps to prepare for the upcoming deer and black bear seasons.

http://heavy.com/news/2014/09/eric-matthew-frein-pennsylvania-state-police-shooting-survivalist/

Read the actual police complaint that heavy.com embedded on that same page. They didn’t read it carefully and they are spreading misinformation about the ID’s. If you read the actual police investigation details in the complaint, you’ll see they found the ID’s in the jeep, not at the home later.

I don’t think it makes that much of a difference but it is frustrating to see where one reporter or blogger somewhere got it wrong and now it keeps getting repeated through other sites and stories.

Excellent point about fall changing the area with less tree cover and a flood of hunters in a few weeks...

The opening day of deer season in NE PA is an unofficial state holiday. I’ve known businesses and rural schools that have closed on the first Monday of the season. My concern is that they may become targets if they stumble upon the alleged perp.

Yes, exactly. Our office building is half-empty that day.

I was also concerned that it would be very natural for him to be hiding in one of the hundreds of hunting cabins around me that sit empty all summer. The owner could walk in to it not realizing it was being used by the killer.

"Not impossible, but extremly improbable. Here’s more on his background"

Well, playing devil's advocate here, if you were going to frame someone to take the fall isn't this exactly the type of person and background to use as the patsy?

WE just received a phone call from someone who is L/E connected to the search. There is a focus on the Shohola, Pa / Barryville, NY area. This is on the Delaware River.

That’s pretty far away - makes me wonder if he had another vehicle stashed somewhere to make his getaway.

Easy walk in 3 days. The terrain map shows a creek or wash heading to that area from just north of the shooting.
