This exact type of scenario kept running through my head the past several days as the incessant bellowing of "a man can never hit a woman" went on ad nauseum in discussions about the Ray Lewis case.
A man can never hit a woman? Would it have been it permissible for the dentist here to punch his female attacker?
Correction: a man should rarely hit a woman. But if it's clearly a case of self-defense from an attacking woman, yep, a man can hit her, hard and more than once. All the self-righteous bellowing of the past few days does not eliminate anyone's right to real self-defense.

In this case the dentist could be clearly forgiven as he couldn’t even be sure that it was a woman that was attacking him.
Correction: The recent ex-Raven in the domestic violence case is Ray Rice. Ray Lewis is the Ravens Hall of Famer who was falsely accused of murder in Atlanta several years ago.

Hyperbole, derived from a Greek word meaning over-casting is a figure of speech, which involves an exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis. It is a device that we employ in our day-to-day speech. For instance, when you meet a friend after a long time, you say, Ages have passed since I last saw you. You may not have met him for three or four hours or a day, but the use of the word ages exaggerates this statement to add emphasis to your wait. Therefore, a hyperbole is an unreal exaggeration to emphasize the real situation. Some other common Hyperbole examples are given below.

Self-defense is defined as the right to prevent suffering force or violence through the use of a sufficient level of counteracting force or violence. - See more at: http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-law-basics/self-defense-overview.html#sthash.x2ocadn2.dpuf
‘real self-defense’
Proportional Response
The use of self-defense must also match the level of the threat in question. In other words, a person can only employ as much force as required to remove the threat. If the threat involves deadly force, the person defending themselves can use deadly force to counteract the threat. If, however, the threat involves only minor force and the person claiming self-defense uses force that could cause grievous bodily harm or death, the claim of self-defense will fail.

Women don’t chimp out.
A man should never hit a lady. Not all women are ladies.
