Ashkenazi Jews Descend From 350 People, Scientists Say (That would explain Chomsky and Soros)
The Jewish Daily Forward ^ | September 09, 2014 | Ruth Schuster

There may be no such thing as a Jewish gene, but communities can definitely have defining characteristics, and one such community is Jews with roots in central and eastern Europe.

A model based on the genetic sequencing of 128 Ashkenazi Jews concludes that today’s Ashkenazim descend from the fusion of European and Middle-Eastern Jews during the medieval era, between 600 to 800 years ago.

The math also indicates that today’s sprawling community of Ashkenazi Jews — there are more than 10 million around the world — derived from just 350 people or so. That previously postulated population bottleneck — a drastic reduction in population size — occurred between 25 to 32 generations ago, the scientists say.

The study was published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications by a team headed by Columbia University’s Shai Carmon.

A number of genetic characteristics are associated with Ashkenazi groups, as opposed to other Jewish populations and other contemporary Middle-Eastern and European peoples. Certainly they are genetically distinguishable. “Compared with European samples, our Ashkenazi Jewish panel has 47 percent more novel variants per genome,” write the scientists.

Unfortunately, Ashkenazim are also associated with no less than 19 genetic disorders, according to the Center for Jewish Genetics. Many are fatal and arise from single-gene mutations. The list includes forms of breast and ovarian cancer, Tay-Sachs disease and so-called maple syrup urine disease, in which the pee of affected children smells sweet.

Compared with Europeans in general, Ashkenazi Jews have a slightly greater deleterious mutation load, as it were. (Sephardi Jews have illnesses of their own, including the genetic disorder Wolman’s disease and an allergy to fava beans – the ful so loved by non-allergic Israelis.)

Oh, agreed. Though the correlation between Jewish descent and radical leftism is and has been very strong for well over a century.

While it’s stupid to think there’s a direct genetic link, it’s not unreasonable to consider the possibility there might be a genetic predisposition to ways of thinking that predispose to leftism.

Obviously the primary causation is environmental. Tom Sowell has some excellent discussion. Radical leftism is common to all middleman minorities around the world, despite the fact that leftism is by no means always in their economic interest.

Bubonic Plague began to spread in earnest in Europe during the 1300’s.

Quite so.

The “minority group” to which I was referring are American Ashkenazi secular Jews. The Orthodox can take care of themselves nicely, as you say.

Over the last century Jews, as a group, have dropped from about 3% to 1.7% of the American population. It seems likely intermarriage and assimilation and disappearance into “white” America has been at least a contributing factor. Other factors probably include a low birth rate among secular Jews and increased immigration from other groups.

True enough. But it didn’t wipe out 90% of the population, much less 99.99%. Plague killed 1/4 to 1/2.

becoming a leftist radical is generally caused more by environmental factors than genetics.

generally speaking perhaps

however soros is in fact the son of satan

It wiped out entire “plague villages,” I’ve seen the memorials. The percentages you cite are Europe overall. On a smaller scale, it was almost total in some localities.

Pretty much the same thing has happened to all Jews in similar circumstances even in pre-Nazi Germany where Jews were highly assimilated. I expect that the Reform movement has an awful lot to answer for in that regard. You know, I wouldn’t mind them if the change in religious orientation were genuine. But it isn’t. People for the very greatest part opt for Reform simply to make life easier.

A genetic predispostion to thinking a certain way. How would that occur? And Ashkenazi Jews in the UK tend to vote Conservative:

“But in the 2010 election, Muslims favoured Labour, while the Jewish vote went to the Conservatives.”

In the US, I think an awful lot has to do with some misplaced loyalty to FDR, a man who in reality betrayed Jews in the worst possible way, and was in fact an anti-Semite of the country club variety.

Millions of fine Jews were murdered in the Holocaust and yet Soros survived. Doesn’t seem fair somehow.

“e figure of 350 seems absurdly low to me. Even after the Cossack massacres of the mid-1600s, the generally-accepted belief regarding a population bottleneck is that there were roughly 100,000 Jews left in central and eastern Europe at that point. Again, 350 is an absurdly low number IMHO.”

It doesn’t mean “at one time there were only 350 Jewish people in Europe.” There were many others at any given time, but their lines crossed the 350 for whatever reason.

I have a single marker for Tays-Sach; my wife does not.

My brother (also a carrier), although also a Cohen, married a convert to Judaism (a VERY attractive Lebanese lawyer) of Arab and other origins who was a partner at the same law firm.

He always joked he had to “look back to Ur” to get some fresh breeding stock. She didn’t think was funny.

You bet. Correspondingly, some areas were missed entirely.

The results of the Black Death, BTW, were not entirely negative (for the survivors, of course.)

In an agrarian society, a smaller population could concentrate on the most fertile land, which meant a big increase in productivity per person.

Not likely any more “inbred” than Sefardi Jews. Probably less so.
