THe kill rate is :
30% survival with trained medical practitioners, saline (already in short supply), electrolites, and medications.
10% survival rate with home care
Since medical installations are already overwhelmed, they already turn away 30% those that show up at hospitals, or medical facilities.
Turning away victims is a death sentance for either the infected , or their immediate families who care for them , and will contract the disease.
Saline is basically a sterile sodium solution delivered intravenously to add volume to blood loss or compensate for dehydration. The same can be accomplished by drinking fluids orally provided the patient is conscious and able to keep fluids down. Electrolytes can easily be ingested by any number of easily available fluids and foods with glucose etc.
As far as medications go, there aren't any specific to Ebola. The drugs they are using would likely include anti-inflammatories, pain killers and others used commonly for viruses, flu etc. As with many viral infections, all you can do is keep the inflammation and fever down and let it run its course.
I guess my point is that if we get up to speed we can do about as much for ourselves as the doctors can do for us if they're not available.
I'm not a doctor though - not even close.
