Native Texan here. This article makes me ill. Big difference in Republican and Conservative, and Texas (even as the Republic) is a CONSERVATIVE state, regardless of party. Get it? Republican, Democrat...Texas votes Conservative.

One of the big problems we have in Texas is that all democrats regardless of what they believe know that they can't get elected to state-wide office here, so they switch to being a "republican" (like Perry did), and hide the fact that they are really closet democrats.

This is one of the reasons we still don't have open carry in Tx, and only recently have been able to make any inroads into reducing the burden for getting a CCW here.

Another problem we have is that Austin is essentially California transplanted to Texas. It doesn't help any that the legislooters exist in such a liberal bubble.

I hear you. You get my point entirely. And "Perry" is a perfect example........except that I know him. REALLY know him, and his family. He's Rick..."the flake" to his friends, and holds the same things you and I hold dear, dear. I knew his parents. I know where he's been and who he is and what he is really about. I do, not in a bragging type of way because the vast majority here hate him, but as a Christian knows another, really knows him from years and years. His parents shaped him in small-town American back in the 70s and 80s when the Democrats were the conservatives and they led the fight...and then they/we figured it out. The Dems abandoned Conservatives.

He had a tough departure from that in Texas but broke with tradition and embraced the Republicans. It stung and didn't sit well, but he did it.

He's his own man, no doubt. But frankly I'd rather he be that than a bone fide Republican these days.

Austin is a cesspool, no doubt. But they know it, and the rest of us know it too. I just worry for DFW now. It went blue last presidential. Thank God for the burbs, and Lubbock. That's all I can say. New roads, great schools, in appreciation for our votes. But how long can it hold out? We can't hold the fort forever without reinforcements. We need a leader. Now. We need another Reagan, and maybe with a "Hispanic" last name.
