Signed Documents Released: Roberts asserts Virginia as home of principal residence.
Topeka Capital-Journal ^ | September 24, 2014 | Tim Carpenter

U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts put a signature to documents associated with the mortgage on a Virginia residence that identify the Fairfax County home as “principal residence” of the three-term incumbent Republican.

The re-election campaign of the Kansan has been awash in controversy about whether his ownership of a duplex in Dodge City, which is rented out, and his payment of about $300 a month for a room in a Dodge City supporter's home satisfied legal requirements for public office.

On Wednesday, records surfaced that Roberts signed a Deed of Trust in 1997 and 2003 for property owned in Alexandria, Va., with his wife, Franki, that contained text about a principal residence.

The documents, which include a series of covenants, required Roberts to attest the couple within 60 days of executing the document “shall continue to occupy the property as borrower’s principal residence for at least one year after the date of occupancy.”

Greg Orman's campaign had no comment about Roberts’ residential issue or details of the mortgage records.

Roberts’ primary opponent, tea party candidate Milton Wolf, made the centerpiece of his campaign the question of Roberts’ residency. State elections officials rejected a request to remove Roberts from Kansas ballots, but political consequences of the situation continue to emerge.

USA Today published a story concluding that U.S. Senate records showed Roberts made use of official funds to spend 97 days in Kansas between July 2011 and August 2013. During that period, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., spent official funds to log about 475 days in Kansas.

“Being the landlord of a Kansan does not make you a Kansan,” said Wolf, who lost the Republican primary Aug. 5 to Roberts but collected 41 percent of the vote.

Roberts attracted interest in the topic when asked about the frequency of his trips to Kansas. In a gaffe that received great attention he said in an interview, “Every time I get an opponent — I mean, every time I get a chance — I’m home."

“Your home is where your heart is, and my heart is in Kansas,” Roberts said.”

Kansas had an option.... they had a chance to elect a Republican in the Primary who would not have voted for Harry Reid. Now, they’re stuck with Pat Roberts who is gonna get his butt handed to him on Nov. 4.

You know Burt, you people slay me. Whenever someone presents anything that might take the shine off of your guy’s halo all you know to do is start screaming “troll”. From your screen name, I assume you’re a guy. Let me ask you this: If you were away from home 603 days out of every 700 days, what kind of relationship would you have with your wife and kids. You wouldn’t know their likes, their dislikes, their needs..... Hell, you probably wouldn’t even remember their names. Now tell me how a U.S. Senator who is not in-state 603 days out of 700 can be an “EFFECTIVE” representative of the people of that State. I’ll be waiting for you to answer that question.

No, I’ve seen this repeated over and over again on local social medias by the liberals. It’s seems they’ve gotten their marching orders to press this issue and you are doing the same here. It’s getting very old because it’s pretty much a non-issue when it comes to much more important things like defeating Harry Reid’s power in the Senate. I understand Roberts isn’t perfect, no politician is, but I guarantee you so many in this country would like to have a conservative politician like Roberts in their states. It’s not worth ridding of him in order to put a far left liberal that will side with Harry Reid and 0bama. There is no way in hell you are going to convince me otherwise.

Believe me, I took a very serious look at Wolf in the primaries. I concluded he was not a very good candidate once I waded through all the garbage and he was not. Orman is turning out to be a much worse candidate.

Roberts can toe the conservative line until we find someone younger that fits the bill or Roberts retires. I can live with that. I cannot live with allowing Dingy Harry Reid and 0bama getting their way and destroying this country further. It’s really that simple.

Tom Daschle did the same thing when he was majority leader. Daschle only visited South Dakota when campaigning and listed his aged mother's home in Aberdeen as his in state residence, while he lived in his lobbyist wife's palatial home just outside the beltway.

Though it should be up to states to determine who is eligible to represent them in Congress, Congress is full of carpet baggers. Look no further than Hillary who never lived a day in New York until she became their Senator. Al Franken may have lived in Minneapolis decades ago, but spent most of his time in Holywood and I doubt has any real residence in Minnesota to this day. I fail to see how a state can be adequately represented in Congress by people who don't live in the state.

THAT was the most important point made on this entire thread.

If the people of Kansas reelect that old fart, they need to put a fence around the entire state and turn it into an insane asylum

Nonsense. A commie Dem is a thousand times worse than a 84 ACU rated Senator who kept Guantanamo prisoners from being sent to Leavenworth and votes correctly a vast majority of the time.

What on earth are you smoking?

Is there anything in the Constitution that says one must be a legal resident of the State from which they are elected to the United States Senate?

That ship sailed with Bobby Kennedy.

I was just pointing out if the other guy wins you could have a real Democrat in Kansas!! I have questions about both. I do believe that Roberts needs to go but I don’t know enough about the independent!!

Ever heard of the newfangled contraption they're calling the Telephone. I am glad our senator has not been racking up travel expenses as Pilosi is doing.

O.K., your points are well taken, CG. Thank you for being one of the few persons around here who offers sound, reasonable and sensible arguments for your case. So many people just know how to start calling you names like “troll”. And......

FWIW, I don’t think Roberts is gonna lose. I think he will pull it out with a plurality, not a majority. He couldn’t even break 50 percent in the GOP Primary; and he’s currently polling at 38 percent. Have to wait and see. Anything can happen in the next 39 days.

Hey, we failed in the primary, where you’re supposed to address issues with your candidates,

but now it’s time to vote against the ‘rats.

That means voting for Roberts - holding my nose.

Not sayin’. And I’m not sharing with you; so don’t even ask. LQTM.

A lot of people don’t realize that we are going to win enough races to take the Senate, EVEN IF ROBERTS AND COCHRAN (MS) LOSE. I guarantee it. We can afford to lose a couple of seats and still have a majority. Somebody has just got to start standing up and saying to the GOP RINO Elite: “Enough is enough. You have accused, abused and used your Conservative Base for the last time.”

The unmitigated gall of Mitch McConnell, who hates the Tea Party, to tell the Conservatives of the GOP that he will “crush” them wherever he finds them. Now, the C-Base is not sending a dime to the RNC and he and Karl Rove are bouncing off the walls saying: “Come on Conservatives; give us some money and your vote. Let’s all kiss and make-up.” No freakin’ way. I’ll tell Mitch and Karl what they can kiss.

The thing about Hillary Clinton and Bobby Kennedy carpetbagging New York is this: They bought homes and made that their legal state of residence. Pat has declared in legal documents that VA is his legal residence. So, whassup?

OMG..... is that the best you can do? Try applying the "telephone" as a solution to the scenario I posted in my comment. And.........

Trust me; ol' Pat is racking up plenty of perks at the taxpayers' expense. Trust me.

I just talked with Karl Rove and Mitch McConnell and told them that they could count on you in Kansas. They said they already knew that they could. They ask that you talk as many Kansans as you can into holding their nose and voting for their boy as well. And, all those things they said about crushing you and other Conservatives: They said they’re sorry.

LOL..... Messin’ with you Mr. B. I know you’re in a quandry. Is there a Libertarian who is relatively Conservative you can vote for? Do me a favor and check out my Post #35 on this thread.

Do you remember a congressman from Florida that got caught using his parents address? It sparked an outrage so the House elite told him to just rent an apartment and everything would be all good.

Rules are for little people rarely applied to any democrat great or small.
