GOP Congressman Warns Of The Real Social Ill Destroying American Values: Marijuana
Huffington Post ^ | Sep 26th, 2014 | Elise Foley

WASHINGTON -- Conservatives are losing ground on the fight to keep marijuana illegal, a Republican congressman warned in dire terms at the Values Voter Summit.

During a conference mostly focused on religious liberty, abolishing the IRS and promoting small government, Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) delivered a full speech on the ills of decriminalizing and legalizing marijuana.

Fleming, a medical doctor, warned of a "growing acceptance" of marijuana -- a fact hard to deny, considering public opinion and state laws. Colorado and Washington state have legalized recreational marijuana, and 23 states and the District of Columbia have allowed the substance for medical use.

"During a conference mostly focused on religious liberty, abolishing the IRS and promoting small government, Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) delivered a full speech on the ills of decriminalizing and legalizing marijuana."

Somehow SoCons and libertarians have to come to an agreement on this subject.

As I don't think the good doctor sees the irony in the support of both small government and the WoD.

But let there be NO DOUBT, politically it's a losing issue. Marijuana will be legal nationwide within 10 years, or so many states will make it legal as to make any laws against unnoticed and unenforced.

Hell, the do-gooders in 1919 were right too.

Alcohol is terribly destructive to society and costs BILLIONS per year, a butden carried by every citizen.

It destroys families, and it destroys people.

The good Dr. is no doubt correct in his evaluation of this drug, but this is not an issue for this campaign.

With so much to go after Obama and the democrats, to get sidelined on this is ridiculous...

This is why the Senate currently belongs to the democrats...

His comments regarding alcohol make him a hypocrite. Someone should have asked him to show the data on deaths from cannabis, he can’t.

Alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical drugs have killed millions and he thinks we should keep this plant illegal.

The real culprit isn’t reefer, it’s socialism.

It should be a losing issue: you cannot support the war on drugs and honor the Constitution. Period.

"Alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical drugs have killed millions and he thinks we should keep this plant illegal."

TENS of million have died, in the last century, as a direct result of ingestion of those substances.

As far as I know nobody has died as a direct result of ingesting cannabis.

Not for me. I don't want pro-stoner politicians.

And I don’t want rabid anti-marajuana politicians. I’d rather have a guy in place that will honor the Constitution, rather than a guy that promised to kick down more doors, seeking to arrest and imprison more people for smoking a plant.
And I like to see someone in place that will end the unconstitutional practice of civil asset forfeiture.

this is the Value’s Voter conference so I expect this rhetoric there.

Libertarians need to understand that welfare and legalized marijuana doesn’t mix. Libertarians need to also understand SoCons don’t believe there are no societial consequences to getting high.

Or if you ask Patrick “Patches” Kennedy, he will tell you the real problem is Ambien.

""I'll show them the real science, and they just don't want to believe it because quite frankly, they want to smoke marijuana," Fleming said. "It's like if you're overweight. Who wants to cut back on eating when you enjoy eating? But it's still bad for your health."

Perhaps the good doctor would like to jail folks for selling cheeseburgers and fries?

libertarians don't believe that either. we just don't believe in a collective responsibility to fix it when compared with the social costs.

In 1917, when Members of Congress thought it was a good idea to ban alcohol, they realized that they had no power to do so without amending the Constitution.

Why does this idiot think this is a matter for Congress, in any respect? And if he does, let him introduce an amendment to confer the power he seeks onto Congress.
