A Southern California city council candidate was fired from her day job and is receiving death threats after she posted a video in which she told a woman that it was “very disrespectful” to have a Mexican flag on her front lawn.
“Hi. Is that a Mexican flag in your front yard?” Capps asks the homeowner, who is inside her home. “You know we live in America right? This is the United States. So, why are you flying a Mexican flag in your front yard?”
Capps posted the video online – and it quickly went viral.
When her former employer Coldwell Banker got wind of the video, the banking giant promptly let Capps go from her position with the company.
Capps, in her video, also suggests that the family could face fines and legal problems for flying the Mexican flag, but the Ontario, California City Attorney John Brown disputed that claim.
"The City of Ontario takes great pride in being one of the most ethnically and racially diverse cities in Southern California,” Brown said. “Those expressions of ethnic and racial diversity take many forms throughout our City, and the City has always taken the position that such speech is absolutely protected by the both the United States and California Constitutions."
In an interview with Fox News, Capps said she can’t believe one video she posted is causing such outrage.
“My family is being threatened, I’m being threatened. We may have to move. I don’t know – I’m really scared,” she said.
“If you want to fly another country’s flag you do it in the proper way. The American flag flies on top; it has a place of prominence and then the other country’s flag is underneath,” she said. “It’s just flag etiquette.”

How do they know that they do not live in Mexico when there is no border between the two countries?
1. This is a free country. One of the most important freedoms is the right to have unpopular viewpoints.
2. Ms. Capps is a busybody. It is none of Ms. Capps business if someone wishes to fly a Mexican flag, a confederate flag, or any other flag. She needs to get over herself.
3. Ms. Capps' putting a video of her harassment on Youtube is grandstanding and not complimentary to her character.
4. Ms. Capps should not have lost her job, unless she implicates her employer in her beliefs.
5. Coldwell Banker likely opened themselves up to a lawsuit. I hope she sues and wins.

Thank you for your post. I agree with your points 1-3. Ms. Capps was in the wrong here. But points 4 and 5 are murky.
Ms. Capps may be under an ethics agreement that bars her from conduct that may embarrass the company. Her harassment certainly would qualify for that, given that she posted the video to the internet. Usually personal conduct clauses are intentionally vague and would give them an “out.”
The company could have quietly fired her for conduct unbecoming. Their press release, however, exposes them for knee-jerk PC twits.

Agree completely.
At the same time, however, the American flag, Old Glory, stands for the right to express oneself without worrying about receiving death threats.

Agree 100%. The flag a person flies on their own property is not the government’s business.
Fly the Mexican Flag on a city hall in the U.S, you got a different argument.
Was Ms. Capps a busybody? Well, I’ll just say that putting a video of this on Facebook was stupid. Why people put their private doings on social media is mind boggling.
But, I’m wondering what a lot of people that think she was in the wrong for saying that would feel the same way if it was an ISIS flag? This country is in deep trouble....
Especially in contrast with the ninth circuit courts recent decision that a Morgan Hill school could ban images of the American flag on cinco de mayo.

“expressions of ethnic and racial diversity”...A Mexican flag represents the nation of Mexico, not race or ethnicity. Flying any other flag on our soil is a statement against our nation. What if she made a video about a Canadian or British flag?
I suspect those that don't scurry back south will keep their mouths shut for awhile.

Why would anyone want to fly the flag of a drug cartel-run, corruption-infested hellhole?
The proper place to fly the Mexican flag is in Mexico.
