No, they aren't that healthy. But this makes no sense:
They are also afraid that a good retirement home would cost more than their combined pensions and that they would have to dig into their savings to afford it.
Sounds like they and their children haven't even done basic research about retirement homes before finding a way to commit suicide. Chilling.

You’re right. We found a good retirement home for my mother when her doctor said she couldn’t live alone any more. We children, all of whom live in different states, paid the difference between my mother’s social security and the cost of the very good retirement home. We had the peace of knowing that she did not have to go to a nursing home.
