Sounds like a white guy’s name. If so, what was he doing in Liberia?

Are you aware of Liberia’s history? It was colonized in the early 1800s by freed American slaves. They speak English. The capitol, Monrovia, is named after our president, James Monroe.

Lots of black people have traditional English names, both here and in Liberia.

Liberia was established by rich northeastern liberals as a colony for former African American slaves and their free black descendants.

Hence the “English” names.

Sierra Leone was also a colony for resettlement of Black Loyalists, former slaves, and poor blacks from England, for the same purpose.
