Ambassadors to the United Nations from no fewer than 32 countries have asked that Yom Kippur be recognized as an official UN holiday.
The UN currently marks 10 holidays, but none of them are Jewish. Among the recognized holidays are Christmas and Good Friday (Christian) and Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (Muslim).
The 32 ambassadors wrote a letter to the General Assembly this past July, JNS.org reports, requesting that Yom Kippur an annual day with a "universal" message be added to the list.
The letter described the messages of Yom Kippur as follows: Every persons deeds are weighed on the heavenly scales of justice and the blessings of the coming year are determined by the good deeds performed in the service of others." The ambassadors wrote that these messages deserve to be marked by the United Nations.
The idea was first launched by Israeli Ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor this past May....

We need to start treating the UN like we do the NFL.
if you go to any school calendar you won’t see Christmas anymore, instead you see winter break. that bothers me more.
nice gersture but who really wants ‘recognition” from an outfit infested with IslamoNazis and anti=American enemy agents?
If I wear involved I would say, let’s have winter break from Thanksgiving until the second Monday of Dec then start school up again, including class on Dec 25. Then let the wailing and gnashing of teeth begin.
I notice that the state of cal employee holiday list still includes Christmas Day.
Exactly. All it will do is confuse the gullible.
well, any ‘recognition’ from the UnitedNazis is no honor, that’s for sure!
I’m ok with UN criticism, but I wouldn’t be adverse to Jewish holidays getting a little more press in the U.S. if only for the food.
The newspapers and morning shows always have recipes for Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, etc., let’s see “A Seder For Gentiles” or somesuch on The Today Show.
Since the Jewish religion is huge and such a large percentage of the world’s population................
Who cares what the UN thinks, anyway? Here in America, Yom Kippur is still a party day. One of those many days on our calendar where you get to hang out with your friends and eat good. And drink and be merry, of course. Like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Saint Patrick’s Day, Cinco De Mayo, Easter, Halloween, Memorial Day, Martin Luther King Day and even Quanza. We Americans have come up with plenty of “holiday” excuses to take the day off from work and have a good time.
Sorry to interrupt your ignorance, but to Jews, Yom Kippur is the most solemn day of the year. AND, it is a fast day. Nothing passes your lips but prayer for 25 hours. Hanging out, drinking and being merry are about the farthest things possible for Yom Kippur. To equate Yom Kippur with any of the days on your list---like Martin Luther King Day--is offensive.
Eid is a fraudulent Mooselimb "holiday" that fictionalizes the story of Abraham and Ismael, claiming that it was Ishmael -- and not Issac - whom "Ibrahim" brought to sacrifice until angels told him to sacrifice a ram instead. It is a ridiculous insult to Jews. Issac was a grown man when this occurs in Genesis, and it had been 30+ years since Abraham and Sarah had cast our Ishmael and Hagar.
Now Ro'sh HaShanah . . . that would be totally appropriate. Though my personal favorite is Simchat Torah.
It would be fun to see the UN celebrating Purim, though.
“And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations who came up against Jerusalem, shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the God of Hosts, and to keep the holiday of Sukkot. And whoever does not come ... to Jerusalem ... upon them there will be no rain.”
- (Zechariah 14:16)
D’oh! I can’t believe I forgot that!
I’ve never heard a Christian explanation of Zechariah 14. Must be allegory so it’s no problem.
Everything's an allegory. Except for Bere'shit and Noach (and Yonah), which are mythology.
But the "virgin birth" really happened!!![/sarc]
“It would be fun to see the UN celebrating Purim, though.”
How? Would they commit mass suicide, or protest the use of the death penalty against Haman for failing to commit genocide against the Joooos! ? Would they twirl their graggers at the mention of Mordechai?
Here’s Latma’s ideas, anyway:
