Breaking just now on news channels this morning. many more under qurantine but 4 more hospitalized with symptoms of Ebola in Madrid including husband.

There are very few hospitals with level 4 suits. I know we dont have them at our hospital. Currently CDC is only recommending contact and droplet precautions, same as for most infectious in the hospital, including influenza, etc.....
It will be another week or two.

I am also astonished that our leaders are mute when it comes to protecting the American people from Obama’s dithering with Ebola. But this attitude of meek, servile submission characterizes their attitude for the entire Obama administration. It is beyond human comprehension.
Great post...yes...Youngor is a key to watch. If on approximately the 20th of October, I read that she is symptom free, I’ll rejoice! Truly! But for now, I still think given what happened w/Duncan’s pregnant housemate (and her entire family) in Liberia I fear this “strain” is particularly virulent.
Also, I applaud Youngor for NOT unquaranting herself (per the Daily Mail article of yesterday).
It may be that “in theory” if one was absolutely rigorous in maintaining Level 2 precautions, Ebola would not be contracted. However, the problem is that with staff working long hours and just human frailty, Level 2 will not be safe if there is even just a single absent-minded error.
I read one nurse in West Africa caught Ebola by checking a patient’s pulse to see if he was dead. She used her bare hand. Another nurse squeezed an IV bag that was hanging next to a patient with her bare hands. The disease cannot penetrate healthy skin, but it only needs a microscopic opening in the skin to infect. Who knows if that opening exists? Therefore, one has to assume it does and maintain protection 100%.
I listen to Spanish radio, and this morning they said that person in question was a nurse’s aide, actually, and not a nurse. She only entered the room of the missionary twice, once just to check on him - and once after he had died, when she had to help clean out the room (remove the sheets, etc.). So probably during that process, she came into contact with soiled bedding or some other article.
She seems to have been suited up appropriately, and right now, although she says she followed all the procedures, didn’t have a torn glove or anything like that, they believe that she must have slipped up somewhere along the line and touched something contaminated.
The other people in the hospital now are her husband, one of her coworkers, and someone who arrived from Africa; none of them have been diagnosed with ebola yet, although I think the coworker has a fever. The other two are in isolation because of close contact with her or, in the case of the African, with somebody else who had ebola.
I don’t think it’s airborne, but it does seem as if it might be easier to get than people think. I wonder also if there are different strains of it, some more aggressive than others?
Youngor did quarantine herself and her family right away without any directions from the CDC or local health officials. That is worth applauding. The other thing to rememeber is she had one exposuure and took it seriously. These nurses and other workers who have died in Africa have the same depressing grind day after day. Their patients vomit blood on them and they clean it up every day. They must be worn out and that is how they slip up.

one thing that scares me is....with Ebola, we are coming up to flu and cold and cough season.....you mix that in with infected out there and we are going to have problems.
The biggest danger is Lagos, Nigeria. Twenty million people live there under deplorable conditions, 2/3 of Lagos are slums with poor sanitation. If it gets loose, 10 million will die there alone. Nigeria does not have the medical facilities to handle an epidemic and more importantly isolate all the ebola patients they would have if it gets loose in Lagos. If an epidemic hits Lagos the population will flee the city. They will become multiple vectors for the disease. The same can be said for most large cities in the 3rd world.

Yup, Rio, calcutta, delhi, mexico city, the caribbean, central america......not a good thought.
It also states she complained of feeling feverish and achy for a week and was ignored despite informing them of her contact with Ebola.

if this continues into flu season, well how would you know the difference until its too late,symptoms are similar initially, hospitals and doctors surgeries filled with people spluttering, sneezing, coughing vomiting, appointments filled up, can’t get to see a doctor....I’m steering clear of those places, will only take one to slip through and there will be a pretty bad outbreak.

Unlike respiratory illnesses like measles or chickenpox, which can be transmitted by virus particles that remain suspended in the air after an infected person coughs or sneezes, Ebola is transmitted by direct contact with body fluids of a person who has symptoms of Ebola disease. Although coughing and sneezing are not common symptoms of Ebola, if a symptomatic patient with Ebola coughs or sneezes on someone, and saliva or mucus come into contact with that person’s eyes, nose or mouth, these fluids may transmit the disease.
in other words, if someone sneezes or coughs right on you, you can get it, so this bull about it not being easy to get is rubbish.

This is one of the things that I think is occurring. If a box of gloves, or the exterior of any if the protective gear, is accidentally contaminated, then there will be problems.
We got our flu shots a couple of weeks ago. There was a time when we caught the flu every year, but not any more. I had an allergic reaction to my flu shot but now I get them without preservatives and haven’t had a problem since.
