The family probably was washing with a bleach solution. The UK Guardian story about the stepdaughter who called the ambulance stated that she took a shower and rinsed with a bleach solution. This is standard protocol in West Africa.
Somehow I have a suspicion that the actual standard protocol in West Africa involves covering up body odor rather than cleansing. I am probably confusing West Africa with East Orange, though.
