A local woman who repeatedly stole flowers from a servicemans grave near West Liberty was arrested at her residence Tuesday morning around eleven o'clock.
The Logan County Sheriff's Office reports that Anita Clem, 55, of 2531 State Route 287, West Liberty, removed flowers from Ben Modie's grave at Mac-O-Chee Cemetery on County Road 164.
Deputies began investigating the thefts in July after receiving a complaint from Ben's dad, Paul Modie, 58, of rural West Liberty.
Modie reported six separate thefts from the gravesite between July and October.
Clem was charged with six misdemeanor counts of theft and lodged in the Logan County Jail.
Ben Modie, 23, served two combat tours in Iraq as a Marine Corps machine gunner.
He passed away in January 2010.
Mrs Clems behavior is the on the far side ...of PATHETIC!
every so often....Im still shocked.. bizarre behavior...and this is one of those occasions.
Reprehensible on its face, I wonder if she had a history with him and thus, perhaps, a reason?
Make this useless POS clean head stones in National/Veterans Cemeteries for 10 years.
We thought flowers were being stolen from graves in our family square, but it turned out to be marauding deer.
This is real theft & disrespect for the dead & for family members. Either full restitution or time in the jug.
More likely that he was the beneficiary of regular memorial paid for by grieving parents, or other relatives. And the flowers were really pretty and refreshed regularly.
This happens all the time at the cemetery where my parents and 4 generations of other relatives are buried. There, the flowers are usually artificial because of the climate, and I think people resell them. I understand that it is a custom for Jewish people to leave a rock, or a pebble on the grave after a visit. Perhaps that is a good idea.
Keep her from the graves, she can clean the ‘heads’.
Marauding deer?
I think they eat flowers on a normal basis..................
Sounds good. After 5 years give her a brush.
This is no different than stealing bronze grave markers for scrap, as was done where my parents are buried.
Throw this b***h in jail.
Ben Modie battled post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and traumatic brain injury.
I believe he was on active duty with the USCG when he took his own life.
