It is not really “Macedonia”. The name a provice in Greece.

It would be like New York claiming they were the original “York”.

Pella where Alexander the Great’s wife and son are buried, where his father King Philip is buried is in Greece along with Palace of the period. The burial mound is open to the public as a museum. The artifacts are written and similar to the rest of the ancient greek writings.

Either way, you are dealing with a collapsed communist block nation in FYROM. (former yougoslav republic of Macedonia) They have no real economy other than exporting people, black markets, white slavery, and other corruption.

THE ONLY hope of containing it there is for the EU to intervene in this non-EU government and essentially do the job. Blue helmets would be worse than useless.

Or perhaps like Buffalo identifying itself as a New York City? I’m sure that Alexander did rule the area, and I’d guess that King Philip did as well, so it isn’t as much of a stretch as your York example.

At any rate, things are about to get somewhat more nasty—hopefully not really really nasty.

I think Macedonia is officially called FYROM because the Greeks didn't want the same name as the province (Macedonia). But everyone shortens the country name to Macedonia. Here's wikipedia attempting an explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonia

As an aside, saw a commercial yesterday for Macedonia on BBC yesterday. Offer 10 year tax free enterprise areas to attract business and investment....

Have you heard of the Treaty of Bucharest? That section that is now a province of Greece was given to them 100 years ago as part of the settlement of the Balkan Wars. Another part was given to Bulgaria, part to Albania, and the largest part was given to Serbia. Under Yugoslavia, the portion that was given to Serbia became a republic in Yugoslavia. In 1993, the Republic of Macedonia declared its independence from the former Yugoslavia. The treaty was supposed to last for 100 years. Not holding my breath waiting for Greece and the other countries to give those Macedonian territories back.

Actually, I didn’t grt into details for the sake of brevity. The region of Macedonia includes FYROM, part of Northern Greece, and Southeast Bulgaria. Of course, the current population doesn’t have anything in common with the Macedonians living under Philip of Macedon or Alexander the Great. The reason it’s called FYROM is that Greece strongly objected to the former part of Yugoslavia taking the name Macedonia.
