Iraq asks for US ground troops as Isil threaten Baghdad
The Telegraph ^

Iraqi officials have issued a desperate plea for America to bring US ground troops back to the embattled country, as heavily armed Islamic State militants came within striking distance of Baghdad.

Amid reports that Isil forces have advanced as far as Abu Ghraib, a town that is effectively a suburb of Baghdad, a senior governor claimed up to 10,000 fighters from the movement were now poised to assault the capital. The warning came from Sabah al-Karhout, president of the provisional council of Anbar Province, the vast desert province to the west of Baghdad that has now largely fallen under jihadist control.

The province’s two main cities, Fallujah and Ramadi, were once known as “the graveyard of the Americans”, and the idea of returning there will not be welcomed by the Pentagon.

But were the province to be controlled by Isil, it would give their forces a springboard from which to mount an all-out assault on Baghdad, where a team of around 1,500 US troops is already acting as mentors to the beleaguered Iraqi army.

Let private contractors take care of it.

Since we squandered thousands of troops to build tents in Liberia, why don’t we just send in the M.A.S.H. unit with M-16’s to do the job?

Instead let's send troops to D.C. & wipe out that whole cesspool.

We are late in this game and Baghdad is nearly surrounded. We might be lucky just to get our people out in one piece. This is a disaster of Obama’s making.
He was so pissed at Maliki that he didn’t care what happened in Iraq. He was too arrogant to re-assess the situation.
There are also a lot of conservatives who are going to regret that they thought we should not re-engage in Iraq or fight in Syria.

Yup, agree 100%

How would you compare the loss of Iraq to the loss of Vietnam with the exception that we lost nearly 60,000 Americans in that war?

The 60,000 Americans aside I would consider losing Iraq to be a bigger defeat because we lost a country we had won before Obama pulled out.

They asked for boots three months ago. Obama said they had to straighten out their government first.

Obama can't put boots on the ground because he would be giving in to his advisors........and he might kill some muzzies which wouldn't be brotherly.

I suspect that the actual words used by Mr. Franklin were closer to what you posted than the words later quoted.

Obola the Magnificent would have to admit that Bush won the War and that he, Obola the Magnificent lost the Victory.
