The Kurds will remember this.
Haven’t many, even most, of the 160 k residents already fled in to turkey?
Yes, they will remember. Like the Alamo.
The Kurds have a long history of remembering as their betrayals go back before 1500.
“Later” when it comes time to deal with ISIS, not much of anything will be done about the atrocities practiced upon the Kurds, who are almost as universally despised by the “conventional” Muslims, as Israel and the Jews.
Kurds are fierce fighters, even when poorly armed, and they come with a built-in attitude that makes them more than ready and willing to go into deadly combat with Islamic jihadist militants. The Turks have regarded the Kurds with a wary eye for centuries, as they are widely regarded as being politically unreliable, and with a strong clan and tribal identity, the Kurds return the mutual suspicion in full measure.
With this as part of the picture, an armed and ready Kurdistan makes a most excellent buffer state between the factions of Muslims (Sunni and Shia), and helps keep any encroachments from the Russian Federation or Turkey from interceding in the Syrian conflict.
Our objective, should we determine it is possible, would be to encourage the formation of the state of Kurdistan, and arm them to the teeth, at least as adequately as we do Egypt, and used to do for Israel.
But the Current Regime would regard this course as total anathema. Still playing checkers on the chess board.
