What Happens When Too Many Voters Support Redistribution?

Back in 2010, I shared some wise words from Walter Williams and Theodore Dalrymple about how society can become unstable when people figure they can “vote themselves money.”

On a related note, I shared the famous “riding in the wagon” cartoons in 2011 and the “Danish party boat” image in 2014. Both of these posts highlighted the danger that exists when societies reach a tipping point, which occurs when too many people vote themselves into dependency and expect (and vote) for never-ending handouts.

Indeed, this is why I’m very pessimistic about the future of welfare states such as Greece.

And, depending what happens in an upcoming run-off election, I probably won’t be very optimistic about Brazil.

Halt! Halt! Gentlemen, ladies, bring out your valuables please. Come along sir, come along. Come along, madam, come along. Oh, is that all you've got ... well, he's got much more than you ... so you'd better have some of his ...sorry... pick them up in a moment... there's about oh, what, nine down there... so you must have about... oh, he's still got lots... oh you've got what? ... you've got more than he started with... so if I give you some of those ... well now, look ... have you got a bit of jewelry? If I give you that one and you have some of his coins ... is that another box? Were you trying to hide it? Well, that's nice! Right! Now. I've got a tiara ... you've got one... you've got one of the boxes... you've got one... anyone else got a tiara? Take your hat off! .. Oh, honestly, it's absolutely pointless trying to do this if you're going to cheat. It really is awful of you;..

We are going to find out on Nov. 4th of redistribution momentum is permanent and will get much worse or if we can hold things off a bit.

If we have a GOP landslide across the board, we’ve got a chance. If we get surprised like we were in 2012 where Obama voters kept coming out of the woodwork, even in States like Florida, then we are done.

Yep. And I suspect a whole lot of redistribution would go on before the first shot of CW II gets fired.

I suspect less than 30% of the population has the cajones to stand up and fight back. The majority will just take it.

Yes... The French Revolution and World Wars as well.
But first you get the stinking state of affairs caused by a government class that takes care of its friends or enablers and declining lifestyles for everyone else.
It is only when you hit the wall and bellies are empty and the desperate government class ramps up on applying compliance to their liberty and wealth stealing activities do people finally realize Revolution and the removal of the
thieves is all they have left!!!!

This, by far, is the biggest threat that America faces today. 80+ years of the Welfare State have given way too many Americans an attitude of “gimme gimme gimme and make someone else pay for it.” It isn’t even “redistribution” in the classical sense of take from the rich and give to the poor. You have middle class entitlements, crony capitalism, Wall Street bailouts, green energy subsidies to millionaire “green” company owners. Its a massive system of transfers from the productive to the connected.
