As concern for the health of the Dallas nurse diagnosed with Ebola continues to mount, local officials and animal rights activists are turning their attention to the fate of her dog.
Dallas officials announced Monday that the dog of Nina Pham, the Dallas nurse, will remain in a safe place to await its owners recovery. The dog, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Bentley, was moved Monday afternoon, officials said.
The decision, while a victory for animal-rights activists, continues to incite concerns about whether pets can be culprits in transmitting the Ebola virus. Both international and local health authorities say there is no reason to worry.
We have no evidence that domestic animalswhether dogs or cats and so forthare able to transmit the virus to humans, said Christine Hoang, assistant director of the scientific activities division at the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Concerns over whether pets, specifically dogs, can pass Ebola to humans emerged last week after Spanish health officials euthanized the dog of a Spanish nursing aide diagnosed with Ebola, citing concern that the dog could infect humans. The governments decision surrounding the 12-year-old rescue dog, named Excalibur, triggered vehement protests from animal-rights activists, who demanded the dog be quarantined and tested. The dog displayed no symptoms of Ebola.
Ebola is spread through direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of a person infected with the virusinciting fear pets might, for example, lick the mouth of someone infected with Ebola and then become infected and transmit the disease. Authorities say it is possible for pets to become infected with Ebola. Infected dogs, however, havent been shown to transmit the virus to humans.

Cute dog. Its a lovely little lapdog.
I wish it long life and good health!
Is the dog a carrier, and is it capable of infecting humans?
Is it capable of infecting other animals?
This country seems to pay attention to all of the least important aspects of any important situation.
My niece is best friends with nina Pham’s daughter. This is a little too close for comfort
The last dog on earth I wish ebola on.
I’m betting animal shelters will fill and adoptions stop because of the hysteria.
Since they reversed themselves on putting the dog down...I’d say it’s a “test” dog....and if she passes, he will definitely be put down.
correction, she is a family member, not the mother
Sweet looking dog.
Don't bet against it.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
That said, I hope the critter is 'clean' and she, her boyfriend, and the dog all survive this.
Question how long was that picture was taken
Sound like she went into hospital I think the dog being infected by 0
Mega-dittos to that.
I have 2 CKC spaniels (one of which is a spitting image of this one), and they're the sweetest little pups (they're both 9+ years old!) you'll ever meet.
Sad to say but this dog will be the only thing that wakes up brain dead liberals. It will take ebola out of the political realm where it is all Bush’s fult and turn it to something that must be handled appropriately regardless of blame. Dea people make good political tools for progressives and I don’t the the Obamatons care one bit if half the population dies. I really don’t. But a dog will wake up some idiots.
I hope...
I hope the doggie is okay
Certainly, you’re entitled to your opinion. No disrespect here, but....IMHO, Nina loves her dog as much as I love mine. If I were in the hospital with a terrible disease which I contracted in the line of duty — giving TLC (wiping the saliva off Duncan’s lips when he was unconscious is certainly TLC) to a man who very possibly did come here knowing he was ill — this is the very least we can do for her. It is one less heartbreak for a woman who has had enough heartbreak in her young life.
I wonder if all of those yellow drums in front of her apartment building didn’t contain ... her belongings? On their way to the incinerator? Treasured photos and other memorabilia which can never be replaced? Clothes, furniture, financial information...
Nina certainly took her Florence Nightingale oath very seriously. I am sure no one wanted to take care of an ebola patient, but that is what nurses do.
Thank goodness we are able to care for her precious dog while she recovers.
Her dog has been saved — under quarantine —thanks to the Dallas mayor — and we dog lovers rejoice!
I am sure you probably disagree.
So, disagree.
Dogs can be infected asymptomatically. He’d never know he had it.
