Any professional field you can think of, if your licenses lapses, you are not legally allowed to work.
Teachers, lawyers, dentists, nurses, doctors, certified public accountants, hairdressers, truck drivers, and many others just are not permitted to be professionally employed without a valid license in their field of work.

For many years I had two professional engineering licenses. Then I retired from ‘professional’ working. I kept my licenses for a few years until I found other interesting activities. I still believed I was very capable of ‘professional’ work. However, to keep paying for work not being done seemed foolish and somewhat contrary to the good judgment I used to rely on. Perhaps my view of your remarks is wrapped around the word ‘ambitious’.
