One of my daughters dated the grandson of a New Jersey judge who worked against the corrupt machine. He was still alive and I got to talk to him about the War.
He resigned his judgeship to join the Army. Eventually the Army figured out how to use him by assigning him to the European Civil Affairs Division (ECAD). Their detachments will govern German towns and other subdivisions after the allies take them. Nobody knew how to deal with them, so the detachments just independently floated behind the combat units that now are poised to invade Germany. His detachment will be in Belgium in December 1944, when we'll hear more about him.
Very interesting. It’s been very interesting see the politics of the 1940s and how they connect to our issues today.
