I know about the washing of the corpse in Islam (Jews do it too—at least the orthodox)but even among Christians and others is there a good bit of touching of the dead in Africa? This coming from more of a cultural practice than a religious command.

Many African cultures (and other cultures) practice ritual washing of bodies before burial.
