The question of him being a “spy” is really neither here nor there.
It doesn't matter what I think, his cover is blown, everybody knows who he is.
The Chinese government is laying the groundwork for a large scale massacre in Hong Kong. They are worried about a backlash from mainlanders when the exemplary massacre is carried out. Hence the attempt to portray the political opposition as traitors in service of a foreign power. I don’t think they have to worry. The average Chinese is virulently anti-American, and not particularly well-disposed towards Hongkongers, whom they view as quislings for the British Empire. Ultimately, ordinary Hongkongers will rue the day they acquiesced to Thatcher’s deal with Deng instead of raising a ruckus. We’ll benefit from a sudden influx of highly-educated refugees from Hong Kong. When push comes to shove, I think it’s possible we will see a last stand by the Hong Kong Police against the PLA, if the police aren’t pre-emptively attacked and disarmed.
