Several shots have been fired inside and outside the nation's parliament in Ottawa, leaving one soldier wounded.

A gunman fired at the National War Memorial and then ran into parliament nearby, continuing the attack.

Canadian broadcaster CBC and several MPs report that one gunman has been killed but that is unconfirmed.

The incident came hours after Canada raised its terror threat level following a fatal hit-and-run attack on two soldiers earlier in the week.

Just saw CBC report all military bases in Canada are now on lock-down.

That would indicate they believe its terrorism or planned attack - not a random shooter or crime of passion.

Gotta be a mistake!

Canada doesn't have problems with guns since they've come up with all of their neato gun laws.

Not necessarily; they are just being hyper-cautious and making that assumption just in case.

They did raise the threat level.

Not sure though if this is really Moslem, or really just individual Moslem taking it on himself. This is just not their MO.

Like the Boston bombers. Might’ve been Moslem, but it was their own little plot, not a massive coordination. Besides, at least they used bombs, the most efficient killer preferred by Moslems.

I had thought the right to gun ownership had been severely restricted in Canada, with private ownership a virtual impossibility if you did not have a legacy authorization. Keep in mind, there is nothing like a “Second Amendment” right to keep and bear arms north of the border, and even those who have a legal right now could very well, and soon, have that stripped away.

How could a crazy person even gain access to guns when the trade in them is so severely restricted? Do the gun control laws not work in Canada? (Do I have to include the < /sarcasm > tag, still?)

Right now I have no way of knowing the cause of these shootings.

If it is an Islamic attack, I believe the timing is a big mistake.
It will get the politicians to take a closer look at Islam and realize the mistakes they have made in accommodating it in their country.

The politicians will also realize they are not immune from the rage of Islam.
Nothing like getting your OX gored to get your full attention. Time will tell what this attack is all about. -Tom

It had the opposite effect in Spain, when a train was blown up just before an election. The Socialists swept in easily.

They allow hunting rifles.

I have people that report to me working in Ottawa, along with my superiors. One comment from them, “hard to go on a rampage with a hunting rifle”. Really? With a scope and semi-auto capability?

I’m sure the first thing will be a call for “tougher gun regulations”. Canadian’s are like Europeans in this respect.

Politicians are not people of logic. They simply cannot work through issues of cause and affect.

That attack killed the faceless masses.
It was not an attack on politicians.

If this is an Islamic attack it is close to home for the politicians and will certainly get their attention.
To me that would be a tactical mistake. -Tom
