Infant denied flu vaccine because his family has insurance (East Tennessee)

A Bristol mother is upset after she says her baby was denied a flu vaccination, even though the health department had flu shots on the shelf.

When Annie Howard took her 14-month-old son to get his flu shot last week, she ran into what she calls a big problem. "My child is being denied the vaccination outright, denied the vaccination because we have insurance. That baffles me," she says.

Howard's physician ran out of the preservative-free vaccination for infants, so she made an appointment at the Sullivan County Health Department. "I called asking them if they have the infant vaccination, they said yes. I asked if they took private health care, they said yes," she says.

She checked in Wednesday and the front desk ran her insurance card. But when it came time to get the vaccine, her son was turned away because he's not eligible for the federal "Vaccination for Children" program for low-income families. "They had the formulation on the shelf that my child needed, but I was not eligible to receive it because I could pay for it," she says.

News 5 sat down with Barry Honeycutt, the director of operations at the Sullivan County Health Department, to learn more about the VFC program. "The vaccine that we stock here is the Vaccine for Children program, which is a federal program for children who either do not have insurance or their insurance does not pay for their vaccines," he says.

He says the health department must follow guidelines, and it cannot give the vaccine to anyone with private insurance.

Walgreens/CVS has flu vaccines. She should’ve gone there. I did & it was covered by my insurance.

Her doctor’s office did not have it. The clinic would not let her pay for and receive it.

The pediatric version is different from the adult one. She was looking for the peds version. And there might not have been a walgreens close.

The dosage is pre-set and it is for adults. Children get a different formula than adults and a different dosage. MOST dosage for children is sent FIRST to health departments to immunize the poor children. Those with insurance, presumably offspring of tax paying citizens, are last on the list and must get them from a private Pediatrician. That Pediatrician receives less than they need, By Design!

Wrong. They get to pay $10k per year for the chance to pay $10k per year before the insurance company will pay anything.

In other words they need a serious medical incident to rack up $20,000 in medical expenses prior to their insurance actually giving them a benefit.

They would not even sell it to her because it was reserved for “the poor children.” The woman was not asking for a handout. The shot was not even available to purchase, even though she called first.

They usually get one shipment. The rest is reserved for County Health Departments. The Pediatric formula in particular.

YOU DON”T COUNT! You are less likely to have children who will continue to vote for the Government Establishment.

So, how much does the shot cost out of pocket?

Not the point - even if she wanted to pay for it, the facility only caters to those who get it "free".

I needed a tetanus shot a couple of years ago, and my Dr.sent me to the health department to get it. (I never got it). He explained that a lot of the newer vaccines were extremely expensive and had short shelf lives. He said that they were losing money because the need was sporadic and they ended up destroying a lot of them after they expired.

The flu shot is one that I skip for myself and family. I had it once, followed by a severe case of the flu. My grandsons Dr. insisted that my daughter vaccinate him against flu on his last visit- even inferred that not vaccinating him was abuse. She held firm. Good girl!
